Lawrence McNamar Obituary

Lawrence "Al" Alfred McNamar, 83, of Waverly, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock.

Al was born April 20, 1940, in Seymore, Iowa, the son of John and Dorothy (Stout) McNamar. He attended country school and then the Ottumwa School System. On January 17, 1965, he was united in marriage to Caroline Loomer at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. Al worked for both the Kaiser-Corson Home Furnishings and Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home before working for Groth Furniture. He also managed the Waverly VFW and owned and operated the iconic Roy's Place in Waverly for several years. In 1986, he began working for the State of Iowa as a Food Inspector and then transitioned to becoming a Welfare Fraud Investigator, retiring in 2003.

Al loved to fish, especially catfishing on the Cedar River. He also bowled for many years and enjoyed cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his granddaughter, Danielle "Peanut".

Al is survived by his wife, Caroline of Waverly, one son; Scott McNamar of Marion, two daughters; Laura Harken and Kim Terrill both of Waverly, one granddaughter Danielle Harken of Waverly, two brothers; John (Janice) McNamar Jr and Bill (Sheila) McNamar both of Ottumwa. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert McNamar.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2024, at Heritage Global Methodist Church in Waverly with Rev. Jon Hennings officiating. A private family burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock at a later date. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour prior to services Monday at the church.
