Arturo Cantu Obituary

Rancho Viejo, TX - Arturo R. Cantu, age 79, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024, surrounded by his family in Harlingen, TX.

Arturo was born on September 20, 1944, in San Benito, TX to Gonzalo Rodriguez Cantu and Rosa Minerva Cantu.

Arturo attended Fred Booth Elementary and graduated from San Benito High School in 1963. He also graduated from Texas A & I Kingsville University in 1967 with a BBA Degree in Business Administration in Finance.

Arturo was an educator for 47 years, teaching in the lower Rio Grande Valley in La Feria, Harlingen, San Benito, and Texas State Technical College. He was also an independent business owner, co-owning Tropical Trail Tex-Mart, a full-service gas station with liquor store in San Benito, TX for 6 years, after retirement, he returned as a substitute teacher for several years.

Arturo was an avid outdoorsman. His passion was hunting and fishing. He spent as much time as he could hunting and fishing with friends and family, especially with his beloved son, Arturo.

Arturo always shared his dove and venison meat with his aunt Evita as well as others. He loved watching Cantiflas movies as well as sporting events. Arturo was always sharing stories about his grandchildren whom he loved immensely. His laugh was contagious, and his sense of humor will be irreplaceable. He loved to dance and travel.

He is survived by his wife Juana S. Cantu; children, Diana Dilworth (Rick), Denice Perez (Jose), Arturo Cantu II, and stepson Pedro E. Sanchez. In addition, he is also survived by his grandchildren, Ryan Diego & Viviana Rosa Dilworth, and Roman Perez. He is also survived by his siblings, Ariel (Donna) Cantu, Omar (Marta) Cantu, Margarita (+Tom) Myers and Diana (Robert) Saldana and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, TX.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1300 Combes St, San Benito, TX. with escorted funeral procession departing promptly at 9:30 a.m. from Thomae-Garza Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Serving as Pallbearers: Arturo Cantu II, Pedro E. Sanchez, Ryan Dilworth, Rick Dilworth, Jose Perez, and Carlos Lima

Honorary pallbearers are Ariel Cantu, Omar Cantu, Sonny Fonseca, Zeek Luna, Reynaldo C. Gonzales, Roberto Saldana, and Joe Gonzalez.
