Stephen Finnigan Obituary

Stephen Alan Finnigan

June 26, 1947 - December 7, 2024

Tacoma, Washington - Stephen Alan Finnigan passed away peacefully into the arms of God at his Tacoma home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous three-year battle with melanoma on December 7, 2024.

Steve was born in Tacoma, WA, on June 26, 1947, to Maurice (Mo) and Lucile Finnigan and was predeceased by his parents, Mo (2009) and Lucile (1994), as well as his oldest sister Kathleen (2016).

A lifelong Tacoman, Steve attended Lowell Elementary, Jason Lee Junior High, and Stadium High School, graduating in 1965. At Stadium, he won the state tennis championship in doubles with Don Andersen in 1963 and clinched the singles title in his senior year, 1965. His exceptional talent earned him a full athletic scholarship to the University of Washington, where he helped the wet weather Huskies rank in the top 20 nationally, and became a lifelong Husky football fan. Steve's legacy in tennis was further recognized when he was inducted into both the Washington Athletic Commission Hall of Fame in 2016 and Stadium High School's Hall of Fame in 2022. He is a lifetime member of the Tacoma Lawn and Tennis Club.

After graduating from UW, Steve embarked on a successful banking career. He served as a leader in the Trust and Investments department at Puget Sound National Bank, Wells Fargo, First Interstate Bank, and ultimately retiring from Union Bank in 2012.

Steve and Eileen were married in 1999, and together they traveled the world. Their shared love for golf and community flourished during their time at Fircrest Golf Club, where Steve served as president in 2003. They cherished their second home on the Big Island in Hawaii, building lifelong friendships, as well as their time spent in Port Townsend. They were also part of the ownership group of the Blue Mouse Theater in the Proctor district of Tacoma.

Steve was known for his positive demeanor, eternal optimism, and generosity. He and Eileen joyfully celebrated life, taking each of their grandchildren on special trips when they turned 16. Steve's faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a strong supporter of Allenmore Medical Foundation, Chapel Hill Church, Young Life, and numerous charitable organizations close to his heart.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Eileen; his sister Libby of Bellevue, WA; his sons Ryan (Kristin) of Gig Harbor, Jason (Aimee) of North Bend, OR, and Andrew (Brooke) of Port Orchard; and his six beloved grandchildren Courtney, Sophie, Luke, Hailey, Maddie, and Claire.

Please join us for a celebration of life to be held on Sunday, January 26th, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. the Tacoma Country Club, 13204 Country Club Dr SW, Lakewood, WA.
