Marian Nixon Obituary

Marian Louise 'Mamie' Nixon, 90, of Lower Burrell, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, after a tragic home accident. She was born in the Renton section of Plum Borough on Oct. 31, 1934, to the late Matthew and Frances Pyer Potochnik. She was a 1952 graduate of Plum High School, where she was a cheerleader, homecoming, and prom queen. Mamie was married in 1954 to her high school sweetheart, Joseph Nixon, for 66 years until his passing in 2022. She worked at Westinghouse and the former Menzie Dairy in Lower Burrell as an administrator before she started her most rewarding job as a mother and homemaker. There was nothing in the world that she would not tackle, from painter, gardener, roofer, furniture refinisher, wallpaper, antique seeker, baker, and cook. She was a judge of elections in her community for many years, a lifelong member of the Slovene National Benefit Society, and an active member of Parnassus Presbyterian Church. She was an avid bowler, loved golf, and even tried skiing as a grandma. Holidays were special as the family gathered to celebrate and play the games she loved. Mamie loved her children and supported them in every activity they pursued. She became a 'mother' to so many of their friends. Gram (Kranick) enjoyed her grandchildren. She took them sled riding, pitched baseball, played board games, and took orders for their favorite foods. She will be sadly missed by her friends and so many family members. Marian was the beloved mother of Sheree Nixon Haus (Francis Haus), Joseph (Alexis) Nixon, and Terri Nixon Pollino (Dean Pollino); adored grandmother to Joshua (Amber) Pollino, Francis Haus IV, Jena (Jason) Kuruc, and Mitchell Pollino; and cherished great-grandmother to Lexie Pollino, Ariana and Cameron Kuruc, and Brylee and Kolton Eiler. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Matilda Balson, Louis, and William Potochnik. The viewing will be held on Monday, Dec. 30, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where a service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Plum Creek Cemetery, Plum Borough.
