Joel E. Buffington
Of Shorewood, passed away at his residence surrounded by his family, Sunday, March 22, 2026 at the age of 80 years. Survived by his devoted wife of 53 years Sheryl Buffington (nee Ott). Their two children James E. Buffington of Shorewood and Jenny Buffington (Ben Murray) of Miller Beach, IN. His sister Mary Dufour of Greeley, CO and sister-in-law Bonnie England of Edina, MN. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents Ernest L. and Georgeen A. (Brohaugh) Buffington. Two brothers Jerome Alvin Buffington and James Conrad Buffington. Born December 8, 1945, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joel was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration. He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force, working as a weather observer specialist. Following his military service, Joel built a successful career as a contract specialist with Honeywell, Inc., Alliant Tech Systems, Inc. and Northrop Grumman. where he eventually retired. Joel was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder on the Stewardship Committee. In his free time, Joel found enjoyment in the simple pleasures of golfing, bowling, reading science fiction, playing board games, and listening to music. He was known for his unmistakable, hearty laugh that could fill a room and bring smiles to those around him. Above all, Joel loved his family deeply and steadfastly, offering that love in a quiet, enduring way. Private family committal services will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial to First Presbyterian Church, Joliet or Lightways Hospice will be appreciated.
