Carol A. Maloney
Age 88 of Joliet, IL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Lightways Hospice in Joliet, surrounded by her loving family.
Carol was born in Joliet, on July12, 1937 to Clarence and Helen Ericksen. Her family moved to Lockport, IL, where she attended Lockport Township High School. She worked at Illinois Bell Telephone Company until beginning her family with Jack. On October 5, 1963, Carol married John "Jack" Maloney, together they built a life centered on love and family over the next 40 years.
Carol is survived by her children, Colleen (Greg) Bernhard, Kathy (late Michael) Salela, Karen Ward and Steve Maloney; her grandchildren, Chelsea (Tim) Rusk, John Ward, Alyssa and Nick Salela, Matthew, Nathan and David Bernhard; her great-granddaughters, Emilia and Kennedy Rusk; her two sisters, Helen (late Pete) Vescovi and Marion (Ray) Peregoy; one brother, Robert (Lynn) Ericksen; numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; one son in infancy, Daniel; her brother and sister-in-law, C.J. (Judy) Ericksen; brothers-in-law, Pete Vescovi, Dominic Tortorici and Robert Tierney; sister-in-law, Nora Tierney, and her niece, Sueann Tierney Bates.
Carol spent much of her life giving back to others. She volunteered at her children's school activities. She was employed by Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home for many years. Carol enjoyed activities that kept her mind sharp especially puzzles and word searches. More than anything, Carol loved her family, she was actively interested in her grandchildren's lives, cheering them on at every milestone. Her two great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. Carol will be most remembered for her warmth, quiet strength, and the way she made people feel cared for, simply by being consistently present.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the team of doctors and medical staff for her exceptional care, especially Dr. Nagarkatte. Also, a special thank you to Lightways Hospice for their kindness and support.
Private family funeral services for Carol A. Maloney were held at St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church, Joliet. Interment followed at Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name to the Ottawa Friendship House, 1718 N. 2525th Rd., Ottawa, IL, 61350, or Lightways Hospice would be appreciated.
