Julia Hawkins Obituary

Julia Welles Hawkins, 108, of Baton Rouge, died October 22 at St. James Place after a short illness. The daughter of Julius and Margaret Welles, she was born in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, on February 10, 1916. Julia donated her body to the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at LSU, which is studying longevity. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Julia is survived by four children: Murray F. "Lad" Hawkins III (Mindy), Warren Hawkins (Betty), Margaret Matens (Jack), and Julia Battle (Joe); three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mickey McCall. She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Murray F. "Buddy" Hawkins Jr., former chair of the LSU Petroleum Engineering Department. The family is grateful to: caregiver Kris Pettigrew, Susie Boudinott from Hospice of BR, the St. James Place staff, and the scores of friends who visited her faithfully. Memorial donations can be made to the LSU Hilltop Arboretum. Please visit www.Rabenhorst.com for full obituary and to share condolences.

Julia Hawkins was such a great and inspiring lady. She seemed to have a twinkle in her eye and a sunny outlook. All of us should take a page from her book. I cherish the memory of her taking me through her wonderful yard when I stopped to say hello.

Unlike most funerals, it is difficult to conjure up an unwelling of sad feelings for our Julia's departure from this physical world. 108 years of grand experiences and a tight knit family like no other we have known! We will miss her presence but know she will undoubtedly be setting records in a better place with Buddy cheering on.
