James Daigle Obituary

James Bert Daigle, 89, was born in the small Acadia Parish town of Church Point, deep in the heart of Cajun Country. He died at home surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. He is survived by his wife of almost 64 years (just ten days shy), Caroline Wilbur Daigle; sons, David Daigle of Gainesville, FL and Mark Daigle and his wife Laura of Lafayette; 5 grandchildren, Brandon Daigle and his wife Scoti of Lafayette, Lauren Daigle, Madison Daigle of Baton Rouge, Samantha Daigle and T.J. Daigle of Gainesville, FL; 5 great-grandchildren, Colt, Scout, Huck, Ollie and Juliette Daigle; brothers, Willie Daigle and his wife Shirley of Port Gibson, Miss., Donald Daigle and his wife Geraldine of Baton Rouge, and sister-in-law Rebecca Daigle of Lafayette. He will also be missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Gabriel Daigle and Hazel Wills Daigle and his brother Kenneth Daigle of Lafayette. Bert was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church. He was born on a farm in the Higginbotham Community. As a youth, he was active in 4-H winning many awards and trips with his Angus cattle. He was chosen as a delegate by the International Farm Youth Exchange to the country of Luxembourg in 1954. He lived with farm families to spread goodwill between the people of Luxembourg and the USA. He was a graduate of LSU with a degree in agriculture, and served on a number of agriculture committees and associations. Bert was a lifetime member of the Louisiana Cattleman's Association and American Angus Association, also served on the Farm Service Agency (formerly ASCS), and was the Past President of East Baton Rouge Livingston Parish Soil and Water Conservation District. He was employed by LSU as Associate Director of LSU Life from 1957-1997. During these years, he was active on campus serving as President of the LSU Staff Senate. He was tapped to be a member of the ODK, a National Leadership Honor Society. He was also active in the Baton Rouge community, where he served as President of the Capital City Kiwanis Club and Christmas Tree Chairman. As president, he established the LSU Kiwanis Club. Bert was an avid LSU Football fan, deer hunter, and fisherman. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home on Thursday, June 9, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. until Funeral Services at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Louisiana 4-H Foundation at LSU Cooperative Extension Service. Bert, known by his loved ones as "Big Daddy", was an example to his family instilling good work ethic, love, and loyalty. Through his example of leadership, he left the world a better place. His quick-wit and companionship will be sincerely missed though we are grateful he is before Jesus pain free! I will never forget the time David and I sunk David's boat off the coast at Ship Island Mississippi. It was myself, the first date with my future wife, Sandra, David and Lisa. We were going camping and sang Gilligan's Island on the way out to the island. Never thinking we would actually be ship wrecked. During the night ill weather capsized the boat and in the morning the coast guard was going to forcefully remove us from the island due to an incoming storm. Having us leave all of our things including the boat. Bert had to rush there to save us and the boat. Man we put that poor man and Caroline through hell in our younger days. But they still loved us and cared for us even in our trials and tribulations. He will forever be etched in my memories.
Love and respect to your family in this trying time and may God speed SIR...
