Carl SCHLEER Obituary

Carl Herbert Schleer passed away on May 30, 2022, after a yearlong battle with dementia. He was born in Hunters, WA on July 29, 1935, to William and Helga Schleer. He was the fifth of six brothers and sisters. Carl's childhood was spent on the family farm enjoying adventures with his brother Jorgen. In the 1940's the family moved to Spokane to run a hotel downtown on Sprague Avenue, a shock to a carefree country boy.

After graduating from Lewis and Clark High School in 1953, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served at Camp Pendleton, CA for three years and then in the reserves in Spokane, WA.

In 1957, Carl enrolled in Eastern Washington College of Education where he met his future wife, Linda Comin. They were married in their junior year in 1960.

A small country school in Arock, Oregon was his first teaching job. After two years they moved to Richland, WA where Carl taught at Chief Joseph Junior High and Richland High School until his retirement in 1990. In retirement, he liked to introduce himself as "an old history teacher".

Carl loved airplanes and had his private pilot license for a time. He also liked tinkering with cars. In his earlier years, he enjoyed fishing, camping, and hunting.

Carl is survived by his wife, Linda Schleer, daughter Julie Brantner (Jeff), grandsons Tyler and Logan Brantner, all of Spokane, his brother Jorgen Schleer (Laura) of Sammamish, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank South Hill Village Memory Care B for their kind and loving care for Carl for the last three months and Hospice of Spokane for their help in the last week of his life.

At his request, there will be no service. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, Spokane, or Shriners Children's Hospital.

I just moved my father into the South Hill Village in April and Carl was the first person we met. He had such a lively, fun spirit. I was warmed at the thought my dads could have a friend there. He will be missed.
