Ian Hoover Obituary

Ian Beard Hoover

September 11, 1972 - January 3, 2025

San Luis Obispo, California - Ian Beard Hoover, age 52, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on January 3, 2025. A resident of San Luis Obispo, CA, Ian was known for his bright intellect, kind, and gentle nature, and unyielding curiosity. His diverse passions ranged from ancient history and archaeology to animal welfare and the natural world, which he embraced with deep sensitivity and commitment. Ian's devotion to learning and his expansive knowledge will leave a legacy.

Ian was born on September 11, 1972, to Bob and Chris Hoover in Berkeley, CA. His early years were marked by a keen interest in the world around him, and his passion for discovery only grew as he traveled extensively and often, particularly to Egypt, the Middle East, and other parts of the world. An avid researcher, Ian was meticulous in his preparations before and after every trip, often consulting verified sources and collecting books on ancient cultures, modern architecture, and Native American traditions. He was a "rest of the story" kind of person- always seeking to understand the deeper connections and histories behind the events he studied.

Professionally, Ian worked as an Archaeological Technician alongside his father Dr. Robert Hoover, and brother, David Hoover, in San Luis Obispo County. He contributed to excavations at various archaeological sites, a role that combined his love of history with his desire to connect with the past. His expertise and work ethic were respected by all who worked with him.

Outside of his professional life, Ian had a love for snorkeling, gardening, and animals. His compassion extended to rescuing and caring for all creatures, big and small. His deep connection to nature was reflected in the care he took to tend his yard and his dedication to his beloved dog, Sheila.

Ian's academic journey led him to Cuesta College and the University of California, Berkeley, where he further honed his intellectual curiosity. He was a lifelong learner, always exploring new topics and eager to understand the world around him. His interests in ancient science and medicine, as well as current events, made him a master investigator, carefully researching leads until all avenues were exhausted.

Ian was also a loving and dedicated family member, known for his ability to mediate and bring balance to challenging situations. He was particularly devoted to helping his father during his illness, assisting with daily care and proving support to his mother during trips to Santa Maria. He had a keen sense of empathy, a quality that reflected both his mother and fathers influence on his life.

Ian is survived by his parents, Bob and Chris Hoover, his brother, David Hoover (Gina), his Aunt Lynn and Uncle Tim O'Neill, and his cousins Will (Audrey) as well as their children, Keegan and Avelyn, and James (Lena). Also, family members Faith, Alexandra, Gabriel, and Matteo Foster, and Shawna Tsinnie.

Ian's sense of adventure, boundless curiosity, sense of humor, and generous heart will deeply be missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on February 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Reis Family Mortuary in San Luis Obispo. Ian's Internment took place at San Luis Cemetery January 15, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ian's honor to Pacific Wildlife Care, P.O. Box 4613, San Luis Obispo, CA 93403.

Rest in peace, Ian. Your love of learning, your kind spirit, and your unwavering curiosity will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of loving and knowing you.

Love ya Kid. I sure will miss our fun times together and your sense of humor. Glad you lived your life with passion and did more in 52 years on earth than most do in a lifetime.

My dear friend Ian, I miss you so very much. I think of you every day, and all of our shared adventures, talks, and great laughter together. I am so lucky to have met you and Dave way back in 1997. My life has been more rich and full and happy due to your friendship, kindness, and love. I pray you are petting baby grey whales, saving spiders and ants, smelling new books, walking the wolf dog Sheila, all in a place we will one day see each other again.

When I became the next door neighbor to Chris and Bob Hoover over 40 years ago I had no idea how delightful our relationship would be.
Their two young sons were bright, active and enthused with llove and curiosity beyond their years.
I was truly blessed to know Ian and his wonderful family. He was, and is, an intellectual, curious and compassionate human being.

Ian was a a true "uomo unversale," a Renaissance person. He and his family have significantly increased our understanding of the world that preceded us.

Ian was a member of the Cub Scout troop led by myself and his mother, Chris, in the mid 70s. Ian always brightened the room with his sweet smile and eagerness to participate in our next activity and/or adventures--whether it be climbing Madonna Mountain, viewing the pig barns at Cal Poly (where we were surprised to be able to watch a mama pig give birth to her babies. Ian took it all in stride and was an added joy to our activities. Ian attended Alta Vista with our son and they became best buddies through 6th grade, at which time they transferred to other schools. His shining light will always be felt in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing Ian. God bless.

Bon voyage brother, and God's speed to your new home, to that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

So sorry to hear of the passing of your son, Ian. After taking a class from Dr. Hoover at Cal Poly in 1970 I did a project photographing and cataloging local collections of Chumash artifacts. You were very inspiring and I can understand how your son would take up your love of archeology...it must have been wonderful to work together for so many years.
