Ralph Allen Obituary

Our beloved Ralph passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 12, 2022. He was born and grew up in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Helen Ruth Cutler and Richard Floyd Allen. Upon completing elementary school in Topeka, he traveled to North Carolina to attend Asheville School from 7th-11th grade. As his family had moved to California, he graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1957.
In January of 1962, Ralph received his Bachelors Degree in Business from USC, where he affiliated with and served as President of Beta Theta Phi.
In 1967 he completed his MBA at USC.
In the meantime, he began his career in banking at United California Bank (now Wells Fargo) in downtown Los Angeles and met and married his wife of 58 years, Kathie. In 1968 he was transferred to Newport Beach, and during his six years there, their three children were born.
In the spring of 1974, he transferred and moved his family to San Diego, settling in Horizon Hills, where they remained for 42 years.
In 1976 he began working for California First Bank (now Union Bank), where he exercised and mentored his expertise in commercial lending. He retired in 1999 as Sr. VP, managing their main office downtown.
Ralph was predeceased by his parents; his step-sisters, Sally Chappell Kitt of Chicago and Jane Armentrout of McClean, VA; and his step-brother William Anderson of Oceanside. He is survived by his sisters Georganna Tait of Scottsdale and Glynn Anderson of Santa Fe; his brother John Anderson of St. Peter, MN; his wife Kathie; their children: Greg (Zinaida) of Napa; Leslie (Andre) of San Diego and Jim of Dublin; and their grandchildren: Hannah, Lukas, Frances, Marisa, and Julia.
Family graveside services have been held.
Ralph was devoted to his family, and we were blessed by his strength of character and his unconditional love.

Ralph was one of those special people in the lives of so many. He seemed to intuit when someone needed help, and his way of helping was to make you stronger, helping you to find your way on your own terms. A great brother, father, husband, and more. My earliest memories are of his coaxing and bribing his sisters to give him great back rubs. We loved it, because we loved him, and he asked so little for all that he gave us.

Ralph was my wonderful brother who took care of the family. He seemed like the quiet banker type but one evening he talked for two hours without a stop about family, life, growing up in Kansas, school in Asheville NC, Thomas Wolfe (writer), USC, living in San Diego, our house in Corona del Mar, Mom, saving money, suck it up (don't panic), the Padres, Lonesome Dove movie, family again, on and on. It was great!

Dear Kathie and family.......please accept my condolences. I was a fellow banker of Ralph´s. He and I had a special connection since we were both from Kansas. I remember Ralph with fondness, particularly during our retirees lunches......celebrating the "old days." My prayers to you and your family.
