DORIS MAY SCHATTSCHNEIDER
Doris May Schattschneider passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, at Rainy Lake Medical Center, five days after her 92nd birthday and seven months after suffering a heart attack. Doris was born on May 25, 1932, in Richmond, MN. Shortly after, her family moved to Littlefork. After high school, Doris moved to International Falls where she met Ed Schattschneider. Doris and Ed were married on September 11, 1950. Doris loved being a stay home mom to their only child, Susan. She was an amazing seamstress and flower gardener, but her real love was baking. Cookies and milk were ready every day after school, along with conversation about how the day went. When Ed was transferred to Minneapolis in 1965 and then Portland, Oregon in 1967, the family enjoyed experiencing new parts of the country and made many life-long friends. When Ed was transferred back to International Falls in 1969, they were happy to be back near Doris' family.
When Doris and Ed became "empty nesters," Doris went to work outside the home. For the next 24 years she enjoyed working at the Holiday Inn. On her days off, they loved to get in their caravan and go sometimes day trips, often times road trips to Ithaca, NY to see Susan and family. After Ed passed in 2002, Doris lived independently for the next 22 years. She then started flying to Ithaca, New York City and San Francisco to see her family.
Doris was a woman of strong faith. She was active in her church, St. Paul Lutheran, serving in many capacities. She loved playing cards, especially Cribbage, was a faithful Minnesota Twins fan, made the best walleye and LOVED to bake cookies and give them away. As a hard-of-hearing woman, getting an iPad and being able to communicate with family and friends via text and email changed her life.
Doris is survived by a family who adored her; her daughter, Susan (Jeff True), her grandchildren, Allison True Jones (Jack Jones) and Jonathan True (Laren) and by three great-grandchildren, Grace and Blake Jones and Jensen True. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Linda Bahr and Linda's family: Cindy and Jeremy Hasbargen, and Clayton (Lisa) Bahr, and by sister-in-law Shirley Merkling, and her brother Robert's family: Tony Grandbois, Shelly (Doug) Trappe and Steven (Trish) Merkling.
In addition to Ed, her husband of more than 51 years, and her parents, Tony and Jean Merkling, Doris was predeceased by her brother Robert Merkling and her special nephew, Clinton Bahr. A heartfelt thank you to Elizabeth Lessard, a compassionate and caring primary care provider at the Rainy Lake Clinic, and to Linda Bahr and Cindy Hasbargan and her family, for the loving care that they gave to Doris for these last many years, but especially over these past seven months.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, International Falls, or to a
