Michael George McCartney
Michael George McCartney, 71, passed away January 23, 2024, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI surrounded by his family.
Born March 22, 1952, in Midland, MI to John Edward & Marion Mae (Drummond) McCartney; Mike was the third of six children. Mike graduated from Merrill High School, Merrill, MI in 1970 & received his Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement from Delta College in 1973.
Mike enjoyed working construction in Midland. He was very proud of being promoted to foreman while building the silos for the Midland Nuclear Power Plant, now the Midland Co-Generational Plant. In 1986, the family moved to Littleton, CO where Mike began 20-year career with Zondervan's Family Bookstore (Family Christian Stores). In 1988, the family moved back to Michigan where he remained manager of the Okemos store until 2007. He enjoyed being youth leader of their church while his daughters were in high school. He also enjoyed a 10-year career driving a school bus for Dean Transportation; he loved helping students with special needs.
In 2006, Mike met & fell in love with Jody (Shooter Calton) McCartney. They married in January 2007 & the Lord blessed their marriage for 17 years.
Mike enjoyed taking day drives & trips as well as walks in the woods with his wife Jody. He especially loved going up north to Mackinaw & the UP; he loved to see Lake Superior. He enjoyed camping & canoeing, cookouts, & watching his grandchildren play with Grammie. Anytime he had a chance, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events, plays, concerts, parades, & ballets. Mike also enjoyed participating in the Labor Day walk across the Mackinaw Bridge, especially the year he was joined by his daughter, Sara. Finally, Mike enjoyed being in nature, watching wildlife, hunting, and woodworking.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Jody; his three daughters: Kelly Tews of Battle Creek, MI, Amy (Andy) Meyer of Williamston, MI, & Sara McCartney of Midland, MI; his five bonus children: Melissa (Tom) Hampton of Haslett, MI, Rachael (Steve) Bramblett of Lebanon, IN, Josh Calton of Grand Rapids, MI, Andrew Calton of Haslett, MI, & Hannah (Josh) Carpenter of Perry, MI; their fifteen grandchildren: Jacob Hampton, Abigail (Christian) (Hampton) Bush, Benjamin Hampton, Andrew Meyer, & Thomas Meyer, Hunter, Hailey, Harper, Samuel, Silas, & Scarlett Carpenter, Rebekah, David, & Tabitha Bramblett, & Conner Wilzer. He is also survived by his older brother Theodore (Karen) McCartney of Chandler, AZ, his sister, Barbara (Dennis) Helwig of Fowlerville, MI, & sisters-in-law Becki (Breasbois) McCartney of Las Vegas, NV, & Sonja (Moore) McCartney of Bay City, MI, as well as many nieces & nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, & his brothers Edward John, William David & Robert Alex McCartney.
Mike loved & cherished all of his children, his bonus children, & his grandchildren. He knew each of them was special in their own way & he was so proud of all of them.
Mike was lovingly cherished by all his family & friends; he will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Lakeside Chapel, 5800 Park Lake Rd., Bath, MI. Visitation will begin at 11 am with the service at noon.
