Marie Winston Obituary

Marie Elizabeth Winston
July 3, 1938 - May 30, 2022
On May 30th our sweet Marie left us….only bodily, though. She still is, and always will be with us in our fondest and happiest thoughts and memories. What an amazing woman!
Marie was born in Pendleton, Ore., July 3, 1938 to Arnold and Anna Wyttenberg. Shortly after that, the family moved to Portland, where Arnold built their home on N.E. 36th Ave. Marie's brother, Arnie, came into the fold in 1941. The family was fortunate to have many close-by cousins, aunts and uncles. And there were lots of large family gatherings, picnics and Sunday visits.
Marie attended Kennedy Grammar School, Jefferson High School and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Education in 1960. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. After graduating, Marie and two dear friends toured by car through the entire United States for three months.
Marie had met Buck in college and their wonderful 63 years together began. It was made official in 1962 at the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Portland. It was a candlelight ceremony because on the day before the wedding the largest storm to ever hit the Northwest blacked out all of Portland. But it didn't even slow down the participants and guests from celebrating. It just made it more exciting.
Marie started her career as an Elementary School Teacher in Eugene. They moved to Lake Oswego, and she taught in Lake Grove, then finished her career after 12 years at Oregon Episcopal School.
In her teaching and beyond, Marie is remembered for her creativity, knowledge, work ethic, sense of humor and compassion for all those around her.
Marie and Buck raised three kids: Kimberly, Leslie and Toby. The family particularly loved skiing, hiking, backpacking and tennis. They traveled in Europe, Africa, Turkey, Mexico and The Bahamas.
When she retired from teaching, Marie had time to fully pursue her passion for watercolor painting. She was very successful in a variety of artistic styles. She was also active in the philanthropic work of P.E.O. Marie and Buck retained their love of travel by taking road trips all over the western U.S.
Throughout it all, Marie battled metastatic breast cancer for over 20 years. She did it with quiet bravery and her enduring grace.
Marie is survived by Buck, Kimberly (Jean Pierre), Leslie, Toby; her brother, Arnie (Linda); plus grandchildren, Christopher, Emily, Olivia and Harrison.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at the Kaiser Permanente Hematology and Oncology Clinic and the entire staff at Kaiser Home Hospice.
A gathering for sweet Marie is being planned for late summer.

Buck and Family,
Marie was filled with such courage and determination. She was such a pleasure to work with. I truly enjoyed our visits, her humor and her quick wit. May you fill your hearts with happy memories of her and know that you did everything just as she wanted you to in the end. She was truly blessed with an amazing husband and children.
Thinking of you all during this difficult time.
