John Baker Obituary

"Well done thy good and faithful servant". John B. Baker Jr., lovingly called Johnny, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024. Johnny is now reunited in Heaven with his grandson, John Baker Flores. Johnny was born in Abbeville and lived in Gueydan until his high school years when his family moved to Lafayette. He ran track and also played basketball. Johnny was a starter with the Lafayette High School Mighty Lions. Johnny was a talented ball handler, shooter and scorer. He was the forerunner of what is a point guard today. Johnny was a proud member of "A Dream Fulfilled" championship team of 1963. After college, Johnny met and married the love of his life, Alta Sollay Baker. Together they worked in countries worldwide. Johnny spent the last almost thirty years helping to provide protection to the private, public and government sectors. These projects in many countries not only saved numerous lives but also led to countless lasting friendships. Johnny was a gentle man always slow to anger with a forgiving heart and quick wit. He dearly loved his daughter, Victoria Baker Flores, and relished in teaching her the values of Amazon Prime, gadgets and travel, especially to Orlando. Graveside service for Johnny will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 1:00pm in New Orleans at St Louis Number 3 cemetery. Johnny will be buried with his grandson, John Baker Flores. Johnny's brother, Tim Young Baker, MD will lead the pallbearers and honorary pallbearers in carrying Johnny to his final resting place. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Allen Prejean, Louis Perret, Colby Hahn, Jeremy Doucet, Winston Sollay, Christopher Montgomery, Ken Williams, Louie Colley, Steven Siegler, Allister Sollay (brother in law) and the Safe Haven team. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable contribution to the Catholic Community Foundation benefiting the John Baker Flores Holy Name of Jesus Scholarship Legacy Fund through Archdiocese of New Orleans, 7887 Walmsley Avenue, New Orleans, La 70125. The John Baker family express their deepest gratitude to Dr Brad Broussard along with the outstanding nurses, respiratory teams and special CNA's who lovingly cared for Johnny.

Alta, so sorry to hear of your lost. I remember you, Barbara, and I going places in high school. I remember you calling on the phone for me to ask if the store had any ball fringe. It is a funny thing what little things we remember. Never knew John, but he sounds like a great guy. He is in heaven now watching over you.

Mrs Alta and Vicki, I am extremely saddened by your loss. My memories of growing up at camp with yall and working along side you in building Safe Haven helped shape me to who I am today.

I always appreciated your kindness and the lessons Johnny and you taught me. I'm here for you if you need me. God bless you.

So sorry for your loss, Alta and Vicki. Alta, I think often of what fun we had together in high school. Remember when my mother sent Clovis to find us in the convertible, and he could not see well enough to spot us, even though we were in a white convertible with bright red leather seats? Daddy was much too vain to wear his glasses, so he went home and told Mother he never saw us, even though we passed him several times!

My dear cousin Johnny was more like a brother. He was so full of life and had a genuine way about him that made people know he cared and was a man to be trusted. He gave an empathetic ear to those in need, great advice and enduring love to those he was close to. We had many phone calls in which we solved problems, commiserated regarding societal and political issues and caught up with family activities. Anytime we got to see each other was filled with anecdotes regarding all the interesting places Johnny had traveled and fabulous food! Johnny and Alta were the most fun couple to be with and always offered gracious hospitality. I will miss him very much and always honor his memory.

What a shock to learn of the loss of my dear buddy, Johnny. We have been friends since the 8th grade spending our summers water skiing at Lake Arthur sometimes playing hooky from church services during Camp Meetings by escaping out on the water I have always treasured our bond of friendship ! Rest in Peace good buddy !
