Shelly was one of my first primary care community "teachers". During my senior year I spent a month with him. It was a wonderful month. I will always remember , whenever he would give a baby a shot he would say "tusheys up" He used to tell me that Mrs E was the most beautiful woman in the world. He told me a story that when he was in pharmacy school, someone (a Rabbi maybe) said in yiddish you will not be a pharmacist you will be a doctor. The last time I saw Shelly was one afternoon when I was practicing in South Fla and he called me for a surprise lunch. It was the 90s. Finally, When I left the 4 weeks of preceptorship in may senior year, I gave him a book where I remember writing, to Dr E thanks for showing me the way. My condolences to his whole family.

One of my favorite memories of Dr Elfenbein, was one , my sister Peg Gorbert told me . Dr. S was also her Dr. He called her Pegala, she drank beer, smoked cigarettes. One day she had an appointment with him. He said to her, "so Pegala, what are you doing to keep healthy?" She said " I punch holes in my cigarettes, I drink light beer and I eat yogurt " With that he stood over her, looks over the rim of his glasses and says, " You´re a regular health nut!" We loved his sense of humor! Sincere condolences to all of his loving family.

With great respect and love for Dr. Sheldon Elfenbein, we offer our condolences to the Elfenbein Family and to the office staff. Dr. Elfenbein was my family's doctor (immediate and extended) from 1970 until he retired in 2017. Due to a rare birth defect, I was hospitalized quite a bit, especially in my earlier years. His kindness, compassion, caring and concern, as well as his sense of humor, got me through those tough times. Those same qualities came through when he helped me to find specialists who could deal with my 'uniqueness', plus my son's issues when he was born.
He was definitely one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

I am so very sorry to hear of Dr Elfenbein´s passing. My family and I have held the distinct honor of being one of his very first patients when he opened his practice in 1963. Of course, back then he made house calls and I remember very clearly how kind and gentle he was with my siblings. He always greeted me by waltzing into the examining room singing "Laura is the face, etc". He was the one that told me I was expecting my son 51 years ago. He loved to hear my stories and many times requested repeat performances of some of the funny experiences of my life. He was also the one that took care of three generations of my family ... with respect, kindness, love and wisdom. He was more than a doctor to us, he was the keeper of our health and always our hearts. I will keep him close, remembering him always. My sincerest condolences to Dr. Jeff and the entire family. You were blessed to have him and I pray that you are comforted by a life well lived and the memories you shared. Rest In Peace Dr. Elfenbein

I have to add that Dr S was our physician right up until he retired and probably for 40 years before that. He was always pleasant and had a great sense of humor. My sister Peggy loved him also, now they will see each other again in heaven.

Dr Sheldon has been our doctor for four generations. He was originally my aunt Teresa Gordon´s doctor. He treated both my mother and father. He has treated my husband and my two daughters. Of course, he is also been my doctor. He had an incredible smile and when he looked through those spectacles he would always make you laugh. After his son Dr Jeffrey has been our family doctor and we wish him and extended family all our condolences during this difficult time. Dr. Sheldon was really the old-fashioned doctor I remember him coming to visit my aunt in Seaford knocking on the door and coming in and taking her blood pressure. I also had the honor to be present when he received business person of the year from the Seaford Chamber of Commerce! He will truly be missed. The Cass family

All that was said in the obituary is true and more about Dr. Sheldon Elfenbein. I have been an osteopathic physiciann for 33 years and he was crucial to my education as an intern the first of those. He always treated all of us interns with respect and frequently demonstrated his humility. If there was a story to tell, he told it in a very eloquent manner. He told me that his last name meant Ivory or elephant bone. So every once in a while I called him "tusk". I´m not sure if that was unique, but he made it seem like it was between the two of us. He could make and take a joke and be serious and his considerate nature shown through. The last time I saw him a few months ago he said that he was working on memoirs and stories . I would certainly enjoy reading them. As I became an attending and a specialist in OMM, Dr. Elfenbein attended lectures that I gave. He couldn´t have been more congratulatory and I always felt honored to have him present. I remember reading the story in Newsday about all the miles that he put in walking every morning. He said goals for himself and met them or at least attempted to. Dr. Elfenbein or Shelley, as practically everyone called him, is one of the last of the Massapequa General Hospital originals. I certainly will miss him.

Dr. S. Elfenbein was my 1st Dr after my pediatrician, from 1969 when I was 12, until he retired
He would always greet me with "Dianey Poo how are you?"
and he told me when I started with him records were kept on index cards. He was a wonderful man and Dr.! The world is less with his passing.
My sympathies to his family.

Deeply saddened to hear of Sheldon´s passing. We became friends at CCNY as members of house plan, Wingate `57. He was a joy to be with and even though we lived far apart we kept in touch. I could listen to his stories which he told with great flair.
The last few years we would get together in Florida when Myrna and Shelly were down.
His warmth and love always showed, he was a great hugger.
Judy and I send our deepest condolences to Myrna and the entire family.

Will miss him terribly! One of the kindest, funniest and genuine human beings to grace this earth. I was truly blessed to know him. Unfortunately I never got the chance to work with him as he retired before I started working for the practice. We shared our birthdays and I will forever think of him every year. Rest In Peace

Dr. Sheldon will be greatly missed, as he was such an authentic, giving, helpful physician-- who served by always bringing knowledge and humor to his practice. I will always remember his taking the time to listen, to discuss his wife's beautiful photography, to find samples of medicine, never rushing me off for the next patient-- when his office was always full. He was a true role model public servant, who knew not to take himself too seriously, but enough to apply his experience and wisdom to all. I am grateful to have known him, and am honored to be a longstanding patient of his son, Dr. Jeff, who has blended the best attributes of his dad with his own gifts: making a fruitful and positive impact in our region. Rest in light and blissful peace, Dr. Sheldon Elfenbein.
