My Condolences to the family of Dr. Melvin Pinn...He was a great Doctor. I just saw his obituary and that he passed. He was mine, my twin brother, my sister, mom and grandma doctor... He was the best doctor ever so caring. Rest in Heavenly Peace. The Frazier-Funches Family will always love and appreciate you.

Wow, Melvin! It's been a year. It seems like just yesterday that we were talking and catching up last year at the 'Clave.' Who knew, two days later, you would take your trip? I pray your family is doing better today than last year at this time. Memories of our friendship and fellowship will never go unforgotten. RIP!

Evora Pinn and children,

I don't know if you will remember me, Evora, but Mel and I were friends during medical school and reconnected not too long ago when I drove through Richmond and we had lunch together. Mel and I met one day between classes when I heard a pingpong game going on and went over to watch. Mel was beating all comers and afterwards, I introduced myself. I, like Mel had played college level tennis and had also played a lot of competitive pingpong, and soon thereafter we started playing tennis together. Thereafter, he became one of the few people in our class that I felt comfortable complaining about the way this course was going or that clinical rotation. He was one of the best clinicians in our class and made all A's and B's on his clinical rotations. When we had lunch in Richmond about ten years ago, after he stopped bragging about his family, and especially his kids, he reminded me about something I had forgotten, which was that I gave him my bicycle during medical school, after my wife bought me a new one as a present. He said that was one of the nicest things anyone in the class had done for him. I then reminded him of a story that he had forgotten. One day between classes I went looking for him to set up our next tennis date and found him talking to the other black students in the class. When I walked up, everyone stopped talking, until Mel saw me and then said, "he's OK, you can say whatever you want around him," and conversations immediately resumed. I was very naive about the world and didn't really appreciate the significance of that interaction until much later. He was a great guy that I'm really glad I had the opportunity to get to know.

Wow! What do I say? My friend has gone on to his eternal resting place. Prayers of condolences go out to the Pinn family that he loved with all his heart, his wife Evora, his daughters, son and grandchildren. Your beloved “Doc” Pinn was an amazing man and friend, and I am glad he called me his friend. Once he befriended you, you were a friend for life. I met Pinn as a tennis player with the Sugaw Creek Tennis Club and he was one of my mixed doubles tennis partners. Just as he always shared life-giving wisdom off the court, he would share those words of strategies throughout the game until we reached the finish line usually as champions, even when I was carrying him (smile). Even when I moved to the DC area in 2002, he would reach out at least once a year to check on my well-being. It was almost like he knew exactly when you needed one of his life-giving words of encouragement. His all-around kindness will forever be etched in my heart. Thank you for sharing him with the world. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life truly well lived.

Prayers and condolences to the family of Dr Melvin Pinn JR . He was a brilliant and caring physician. He was Medical Director at Neighborhood Health Center in Charlotte N.C. I was one of the nurses that worked with him for several years. I learned a lot working with him. He surely shared his God given gifts and talents to this world. His knowledge, wisdom and friendship will never be forgotten.

Dr. Melvin T. Pinn Jr. was my mentor and he departed exactly two months after my mother. His was one of the first voices I heard from. Dr. Pin was a great figure in my life, and I am, as he always proudly proclaimed, his first Rho Man of the Year. I heard it so many times, I only remember it with his voice. Dr. Pinn made you feel important and welcomed with his words.

To the Pinn Family, as you stand at the Banks of the Jordan, please know he is an example of how God can take a man and allow him to do great things in this life. We appreciate you sharing him with us all.

I was a classmate of Melvin's at Johnson C. Smith University, Class of 1970. Pinn was a great guy and I always knew he would accomplish great things. My sincere condolences to his wife and family! May precious memories of Melvin and all the good times you shared sustain you in the difficult days ahead! We shall all meet again!!!

It is with profound sadness that I acknowledge the death of Dr. Melvin Thomas Penn, Jr. I met Penn at Johnson C. Smith in 1967. I found him to be intelligent, compassionate, and gifted person. Melvin was a friend and a Frat Brother who was attempted to "Lift individuals while he Climbed. I will truly miss his kind and accepting personality! I love you my brother and thank you for being you!

To Elvora and family. I feel some of your pain because Pinn was a great friend and classmate. He seemed to always be around while we were on campus. I looked forward to spending time with him at homecoming. Please know how much Pinn was loved, appreciated and will truly be missed. He was one of the good guys and we know how small that group can be. You will definitely be in my heart, thoughts and prayers.

Dr Pinn was my classmate, roommate, homeboy, fraternity brother and friend. Wherever he was, I was there with him. Had not it been with my current illness, I would have been there with.

My biggest accomplishment with him was being at the hospital when his first child was born. We were inseparable friends. God watched over him as he lived a full life. He had a lovely wife and wonderful children. My friend and frat brother has gone on to a better place. Good bye my friend. As the hymn says, “And when we’ve said our last good bye, we’ll love Omega Psi Phi.”

To the Pinn family,
I knew Melvin was a wonderful person before I met him. Evora would tell me that ALL the time when we were roommates at Hampton Institute....She was right! They were great together! I had the honor of being a Bridesmaid at their wedding. The wonderful memories and smiles throughout the years will always be with me.

On behalf of the Johnson C. Smith University Class of 1970 we express our sincere condolences for our beloved Classmate, Class President, and friend. You were the link that kept us together for these 52 years. Even though our hearts are broken, we are so thankful we had the opportunity to know you and to call you friend. Dr. Pinn was an accomplished family man, medical doctor, teacher, civic leader, scholar, and tennis player. He significantly and positively impacted the lives of the legions of people whose paths he crossed and lives he touched. He left a legacy that few have matched but that many should follow.

Melvin use to sit behind me in our Government class in high school and enjoyed picking and teasing me by flipping my ears. He continued to do that even in our adult life because he knew that it aggrevated me.

My deepest condolences to the entire Pinn Family,... I am so sorry. Just the other day, I read the news of his and my Dunbar High School tennis coach Mr. Carl Penn passing in Lynchburg recently, who started us out with tennis during high school. My many days on Docs. Court with Melvin, Elmer, Soup, Arthur, and the hosts of friends we grew up with that Doc. sponsored, all the way to Forest Hills, which I was proud to attend. Those memories of growing up with Melvin and The Tennis Court on Pierce Street will forever be imbedded in my heart and soul. May GOD Bless You...

Melvin has known my family since we were youngsters playing tennis at my grandfather's home at 1422 Pierce. We are shocked to hear of his passing. I had been calling to make him aware that I would be accepting an award on behalf of my grandfather, Dr. R.W. Johnson bat the Omega Conclave in Charlotte and hoped to see him there. Am just returning from the ATA Tennis Nationals in Orlando and learned of the news. To the Pinn Family. I want to thank you for sharing Dr. Pinn with us. Dr. Pinn was a mentor to me and my Rho Fraternity brothers. Dr. Pinn read me into Rho Chapter in the Fall of 1991. I was a young man at Johnson C. Smith University and Dr. Pinn's mentorship meant so much to me and all my Rho Chapter brothers.

I never missed a homecoming at Johnson C. Smith, so every year when I saw Dr. Pinn I took time to chat with him. He always had wisdom and knowledge to give me. Dr. Pinn told me he was proud of the man I had become. I was just excited to be in his presence because he always had positive things to share.

Dr. Pinn and I hung out at the Conclave on Thursday at the Westin and took our last photo together. Like all our other meetings he poured knowledge and wisdom into me. Dr. Pinn attended my Omegas in Business Reception that was sponsored by Wells Fargo. We recognized Dr. Pinn at the reception and his presence again lit up the room.

I know over the next few days, weeks, months, and years it will be hard not having Dr. Pinn around. However, we all will think back on the amazing memories Dr. Pinn gave us.

I grew as an I graduate, pledgee, and Omega man under the broad wings and shoulders of “Pinn.” What a giant of a friend, man and Brother. We share the same birth state- and thus, many friends and relatives. “Pinn” is among that rare group of eagles that when your thoughts glance upward thinking about him, a smile inevitably comes to mind. To God and his family - Thank You for sharing him with us. As we live, he he will always run warm as the BLOOD through our veins.
