Richard Martino Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 10, 2021.
On the evening of Sunday, November 7, 2021, Richard C Martino passed away peacefully at the age of 83 years old. Richard was born on August 1, 1938 in Long Island City, New York to Rose Pellegrino and Alfred Martino. A beloved husband, father, and uncle Richard, otherwise known as Hon, Dad, Dick, Dickie, Marty, and father, he was known for his keen sense of humor, rapier wit, sharp mind, larger than life personality, and love of sports. Baseball was his passion. His knowledge was extensive and could fill an encyclopedia. He played baseball semi-professionally until an injury forced him to stop. Since then he remained a diehard Yankee fan.

Richard built a successful food importing business with his business partner of 30 years, Leo Bauman, and was admired by everyone he came in contact with. A very proud man, he cherished his wife, Elise. He cared deeply for his family, and of course he had a passion for sports, cars, German Shepherds (he had 10 throughout his life, sometimes 3 at once), travel, and the beautiful homes he lived in. Richard loved the beach, and swimming in the ocean and in the Long Island Sound. He passed his love of swimming, saltwater, and beautiful beaches to his 3 children, Cristine, Jackie, and Rich.

Coming from a large Italian family, Richard had an extremely refined pallet for quality food. He was known for concocting recipes that would make one raise an eyebrow, yet would end up being the most delicious combination. He was especially creative with breakfast and dessert, mostly consisting of heavy cream and butter.

All in all Richard lived an active life full of love, beauty, and passion. He is predeceased by his parents, and his sisters, Ann Thomas and Rosemary Russo. Richard is survived by his adoring wife of 42 years, Elise Martino (née Silverstein), his 2 daughters Cristine (Chris) and Jackie, and his son Richard (Robert).

He will be forever remembered and missed by all who knew and loved him.

Only recently did I learn of Richards passing. I was his Physical Therapist helping him recover from a knee replacement that continued to give him a lot of trouble. Despite that RIchard continued to fight and I remembered that he had great spirit and was passionate about life. He had wonderful stories ( The Rabbi and Basketball ) and whenever I called him I would start by saying " A man said to the Universe....Sir , I exist " and he would finish by saying " However , said the Universe, that fact does not create in me a sense of obligation". We both would laugh and start in with one another. In all of my going on 36 years of practice he will be one of the most memorable patients I had the privilege of being acquainted with. My condolences to the family. RIP to a great man.

I first meet Rich in the 6th grade at Valley Stream Wheeler Ave. school. He was in a class with my twin brother Nick and when he saw me for the first time he said, "It looks like they made two of them." We played football in high school and Rich was an outstanding quarterback and baseball player. Growing up we had fun-card games-stories-and a genuine friendship. Rich was the best storyteller in the world, and no one top his sense of humor and he would have you laughing for hours. Rich was a great businessman and he helped me in my career as stockbroker. He truly was one of a kind a lovable friend Rich rest in peace and I know you have everyone smiling in heaven. God bless--Tony Gullo
