Kenneth Kizis Obituary

Reverend Kenneth G. Kizis, Pastor Emeritus, St. Michael's Church, Olyphant, PA, died on June 28, 2022 at Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing, Wilkes Barre. Father Kizis, son of the late George S. and Ann R. Machonis Kizis, was born in Pittston on May 19, 1933. He received his early education Saint Mary's Assumption School, Pittston and graduated from Saint John's High School, Pittston.

Father attended Christ the King Seminary, Saint Bonaventure, New York where he completed his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1959, in Saint Peter's Cathedral, Scranton, by the Most Reverend Jerome D. Hannan, D.D., late Bishop of Scranton.

Father Kizis was assigned as assistant pastor at SS. Peter and Paul, Hazleton; Saint Joseph's, Scranton; SS. Peter and Paul, Towanda, and Immaculate Conception, Scranton. He was chaplain at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale. Father began his first pastorate at All Saints Parish, Dunmore. He was appointed pastor of Saint Catherine of Siena, Moscow in 1985 and as pastor of Saint Michael's, Olyphant on June 20, 1991 where he remained until his retirement and appointment as Pastor Emeritus on April 23, 2003. Father Kizis also served the diocese as Director of Catholic Charities in Carbondale; Moderator of Carbondale Chapter Nurses Guild; Vice-President of Dunmore Central Catholic High School; Chaplain at Marywood Novitiate, Dunmore and Principal of Dunmore Central Catholic High School, later Bishop O'Hara High School.

He is survived by a niece, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers Joseph and wife Elaine Kizis, and Leonard and wife Agnes Kizis.

Viewing will take place at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, 322 Chestnut Street, Dunmore, PA, on Thursday, June 30, 2022, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Vespers will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish at 7:00 p.m.

A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, on Friday, July 1, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish, Dunmore. A viewing will also take place Friday morning, 9:00 a.m. prior to the 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass.

Interment will be in Saint Michael's Byzantine Cemetery, Dunmore.
