Our devoted mother, Judene Casper West, who lived with kindness, faith and joy passed peacefully through the veil on Saturday, August 9, 2025, after a short and sudden illness.
Mom was born on June 27, 1939, to Bernice Grant Casper and Arthur Lionel Casper at Cottonwood Hospital - a place that would later hold special meaning in her life. Years later she returned as a Patient Support Volunteer offering comfort and care to others. She was working one night when the ambulance brought our 10-year-old brother Chris in after he'd been hit by a car. She ended up spending every day there for weeks as Chris healed.
Mom and Dad, Shelby Jay West, (Jay to most people) were married on April 14,1961 in the Salt Lake Temple, after they were set-up by her sister Sandra (Walton). Mom loved to tease Dad about "The Proposal" when he, so romantically, tossed the ring box into her lap while driving, asking if she wanted to get married. We are so happy that she said yes.
Our parents shared a beautiful and fulfilling love story for 61 years, raising four children - each with their own unique personality. We feel deeply blessed to have been raised in the abundance of their love, and we are grateful for the dedication and care they poured into giving us a meaningful life.
Mom and Dad loved to travel the world together and made sure that, on top of those adventures, we took family vacations every single year.
Mom made our home welcoming to everyone, especially her family. She adored each one of her nieces and nephews and had them in our home often. Aubrey (Kimball) Nickerl was considered another sibling for years, as she was a permanent fixture at our house, which we all loved!
Taking care of her parents in their later years brought Mom so much joy and we loved living across the street from our grandparents.
Dad bought the home across from our grandparents so Mom could be close to them, as well as her two youngest siblings Scott and Paula. This situation was made even more fun when our Aunt Sandra and her husband, Boone and their children (Jeff and Craig Colegrove) and Uncle Art and his family (Emily and Terry Casper) all bought houses across the corner from us as well. "Casper's Corner" was what childhood dreams were made of and brought Mom so much joy.
Mom and her siblings have always been close. Weekly, sometimes even daily, phone conversations were the norm.
Having a close relationship with Dad's family was important to Mom as well and she was always grateful for her in-laws and all they have done for Dad, especially in his later years as he suffered from Dementia.
Caring for young children was our mom's most meaningful gift and loving on her grand-kids was her one of her greatest blessings. When her first great grand baby was born, she was so excited. Palmer Joy Vanderhooft made her Grandma Great grin from ear-to-ear.
Being the grandma who got to babysit every day so moms and dads could work, was something Mom did for over 10 years, and she loved every minute of it! She watched Alex, Shelby, Lindsay and Tyler but Katie didn't get that opportunity because Pam's family moved to Washington State. Those were some of Mom's happiest years.
People were naturally drawn to our mom because of her rare ability to make others feel truly loved and accepted. She cherished her friendships, showering them with intention and care, and she was deeply loved in return. Since her passing, countless friends have reached out to share the impact she had on their lives, a testament to her warmth and generosity she so freely gave.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ was of great importance to Mom and Dad, and they were such great examples to so many in the church. Mom served in many callings throughout her life including Relief Society President, Primary President and Bishop's wife. She had a great love for her Heavenly Father and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Mom and Dad were able to serve a Member Locator Mission together in Salt Lake from January 2007 to January 2008.
Mom is survived by her children Shauri West, Pamela (Cory) Stevens, Troy West; grandchildren Alex (Olivia) Stevens, Katelyn (Dillon) Stevens Vanderhooft, Shelby West, Lindsay West and Tyler West: and her great granddaughter Palmer Joy Vanderhooft. Siblings Scott (Stephanie) Casper, Paula Kimball and Luana Casper. Dad's siblings Gary (Carolyn) West, Paul (Karen) West, Margaret Giles and Christine (Val) Day. So many nieces and nephews we can't name them all here.
Preceded in death by Dad, the love of her life, Shelby Jay West; son Christopher J. West, parents Arthur Lionel and Bernice Grant Casper; siblings Sandra and Harold Walton; Arthur (Luana) Casper, Corey Casper; In-laws Russell (Paula) Kimball, Vawna (Gary) West, Georgia (Paul) West, Susie and Robert Sigman; Dad's parents Shelby and Grace Hunsaker West.
We, her children Shauri, Pam and Cory, and Troy would like to thank everyone at Cedarwood of Sandy Assisted Living, Beehive Homes of Riverton and Utah Home Health and Hospice for taking such great care of our sweet Mama. We will be forever grateful for all that you've done.
Viewing will be held from 9:30-10:45 a.m. with her funeral beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at the Copperview Stake Center, 12154 South 3600 West in Riverton, Utah.
We love you Mom and so grateful for your outstanding example! Until we meet again!
