Joel Martin Obituary

Joel Lee Martin, age 56, of Mount Airy, MD, died Sunday, June 19, 2022 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 25, 1965 in Youngstown, OH, he was the son of Jerry and Marlene Martin of Boardman, OH. He was the husband of Wendy Jo Fox, his wife of 7 years.
Joel was a graduate of North Shore Community College, receiving his Associates degree. He was a submariner in the U.S. Navy for 11 ½ years, serving as a radioman. He was employed as a Senior Fabrication Technician with the Army Research Lab in Adelphi, MD and was a member of the American Legion Post 191 of Mount Airy. Joel enjoyed skydiving, traveling with his wife and spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife he is survived by sons, Steven Martin and fiancée Krystal Knott and Brian Martin; stepdaughter, Kate Ashley Smith and husband Adam; stepson, Justin Riesz and wife Chantal; and fur baby Dakota. He was Grand-Dude to three grandchildren, Stella Rose Martin, Carter Bray and Addison Belle Smith. Also surviving are brothers, Matt Martin and wife Jenn and Neal Martin; nieces, Mitzi, Savana and Sierra Martin and nephews, Neal Jr., John and Jax Martin.
Friday, June 24 at 12 noon the family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home-Libertytown, 11802 Liberty Rd., Frederick, MD 21701.
A celebration of life will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Naval military honors. Pastor Phil Beck of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Walkersville, will officiate for the service.
