Janet Adams passed on April 5'th, 2025 after a brief stay at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, Vermont. She was fully supported by many people that cared for her and loved her for while at the Respite House. Janet was born in Burlington, Vermont on February 13, 1964. She is the third of four children born to Mr. and Mrs. John Adams of Grand Isle. Janet was admitted to Brandon training School at the age of three years old, as her parents were having difficulty managing her care in the home. Janet resided at Brandon Training School for ten years until 1977 when she was transferred to a care facility in Burlington for young adults with disabilities where she learned self-care, domestic, and communication skills.
After living in a few different shared living situations from 1991 to 1994, Janet found the home of George and Sue Heflin, in Shelburne. Janet was supported by the family in the community and enjoyed going out to the movies, restaurants, hiking on bike paths/ parks, music concerts, plays, swimming, and volunteering at a local nursing home. Janet had developed a strong, positive and trusting relationship with George and Sue, and the other members of the family. Janet, as reported by the family, was expressive, caring, and communicative.
Around 2001, there was another client that had moved into the house, whom Janet bonded with and would be supported by him indirectly for the next 25 years.
Janet continued to live with this family where she continued to live an active life of traveling, including trips to Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Niagara Falls. Janet also was able to visit in the family's motor home Myrte Beach, Wells Maine, and Disney and Busch Gardens in Florida. Janet also visited Hawaii in 2015 and enjoyed the beach, the water, and an occasional fruity pineapple drink! Janet seemed to enjoy the travel of these family trips – she was quite the world traveler! After George (2006) and Sue (2017) Heflin passed, Janet continued to live in the same home and be supported by Sue's daughter Holly Hefrin for the next few years.
In September of 2022, Janet moved into the caring home of Pat and Kara Grenier and their four little ones in Milton, where Janet enjoyed participating in the family time. Janet also enjoyed visiting their summer camp by the water. In the last few months, Janet really appreciated her daily coffees, and found a new friend: a stuffed piglet, who she would snuggle up to when sleeping in her bed. Janet was a firecracker sometimes, throwing her books and an occasional empty mug when she wanted attention, or just threw it for the heck of it. Janet liked to keep people around her on her toes, as she had a devilish streak.
A Celebration of Life with visiting hours will be held at AW Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel on April 16, 2025 from 3pm-5pm.
