Henry Joe was a professor at Knox College who changed my life. He guided me in my search for living a meaningful life. When I graduated in 1970 I never saw myself as a teacher but as a craftsman (woman). As I worked my way through making ceramic art and life as a wife and mother, I began teaching art in a middle school at age 55. Now I understand the legacy and caring a committed teacher like Henry Joe leaves for those who follow.

I was a senior at Knox when Henry arrived at Knox. He was the antithesis of my first ceramics teacher, Dennis Parks, and I was not pleased, but his patience, generosity, and knowledge won me over. My wonderful career working with and teaching ceramics would not have taken the path it did without Henry's guidance. I am forever grateful. My condolences to Patty and the family.

Professor Henry Joe taught me ceramics at Knox. He helped teach me a skill and passion that has stayed with me for all these years. He was a wonderful teacher who gave me, a biology major, a completely different perspective. He was so much a part of what made Knox the place that it was for me and many other students. I am so glad that I was able to have him as a teacher.
