Memory I saw a sled set out with someone´s trash one year. I stopped, put it in the trunk, and took it home. One of the braces for one of the runners was broken. Same problem as was on Anne´s sled. I reasoned that from the two one good sled could be made and I knew just who would know how to do it. So, I gave them to my friend Hal to make one good one from the two. Actually, he knew how to make two good sleds from the two and did so. Hal gave the sleds to a family that could not otherwise have easily afforded them. I got the nicest letter from a lady thanking me for the sleds. In brief the letter said, "My children are having such a good time with the sleds you gave them. Thank you so much." Made me cry. Does now too. I protested to Hal that he deserved all the credit, but he would have none of that. Far as he was concerned I had given the family the sleds and that is what he told her.

Wish I had that letter now. I probably do. Somewhere.

Hal was a good friend that I actually never met in person. We met through an eBay purchase. When the model engine arrived Hal and I talked about it by phone. That began our friendship through mutual interests in model airplanes and engines.

Hal and I talked often and traded stories and model engines throughout the years. Sometimes Hal would call me late at night to talk about models and engines. I live in Arizona, so there is a couple hours difference. Usually when the phone rings late you might expect a family emergency or unexpected problem. I was so used to his late calls that I got to telling my wife not to worry, "It's probably just Hal wanting to talk about model engines". Actually, I always welcomed a phone call from Hal no matter what time of day or night. A Great guy and a joy to talk with.

I wanted to share this funny story about the late night
calls. Now, if the phone rings late at night, It wont be the familiar voice on the other end of the line.

Rest in peace, buddy.

In addition to being my very close friend for over 30 years, my youngest daughter Kathy is married to Hal's youngest son Seth. I am deeply saddened by Hal's passing and will miss the frequent lunches and conversations we have had over the many years of our friendship. Hal was, in my opinion the true definition of a "good" Christian by his words, acts and deeds.
