Annie Mae Hawthorne Clark, 87, of Greenville S.C. formerly of Abbeville, died February 23, 2025, following a brief illness.
Born in Anderson, S.C. on February 10, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Robert L. Hawthorne, Sr. and late Bertha Elgin Hawthorne. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Robert "Bobby" L. Hawthorne, Jr. and Elgin Hawthorne, both of Abbeville, S.C.
Annie Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander "Aleck" Gray Clark in 1995. Aleck was her hometown sweetheart and the love of her life, whom she married in 1960. She is survived by three sons, Paul Clark (Sissy), Mark Clark (Sandy), and Robert Clark (Mary); five grandchildren, Chase Clark, Dylan Clark, Mary Myers Hiller (Rivers), Alexander "Alex" Gray Clark, II and Christopher Robert Clark; and one great grandchild, Oliver Robert Hiller.
After being an honor graduate of Abbeville High School and the school pianist her junior year, Annie Mae graduated from Furman University with the class of 1960. She was an avid singer, piano player, gardener and bridge player. Her most prized participation was being a member of the Furman Singers and Adult Choir at First Baptist Church of Greenville for over 20 years. She was a former board member of the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs and also served as Council Treasurer and was the past President of the Truesdale Garden Club. Annie Mae was also a member of the Laurens Road Garden Club and initiated the revitalization of the Wildflowers Garden located at the Kilgore-Lewis House. She was honored to be able to donate a lovely grand piano to the chapel of Furman University in memory of her beloved husband, Aleck. Annie Mae was also a member of both Greenville Women Giving and the Poinsett Club.
Annie Mae and her family were active members of Eastlan Baptist Church many years before becoming members of First Baptist Greenville in the 1970's. The family have been devoted residents of the Gower Estates area in Greenville for over 50 years.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown on North Main Street in Greenville with a service immediately following in the chapel. A graveside service will follow in Long Cane Cemetery on Highway 20 in Abbeville, S.C. A drop-in with refreshments will be held after the burial at the Village Grille in Abbeville.
