Anne Louise Harrison Smith, age 65 of Wilmington, DE, passed peacefully from her life on June 6th, 2022, with her family by her side. She was born in Danville, PA on July 7th, 1956, daughter of the late Charles E. and Bernardine M. Harrison.
Anne courageously battled Glioblastoma (GBM) brain cancer for just shy of 4 years. While living with GBM, her positivity and love for God, life and family was unwavering. Anne underwent 2 brain surgeries during this time, recovering well and miraculously emerging as her full self after both of them. Anne handled each step of her journey with grace.
Anne earned a BA in Physical Education from the University of Delaware (1978). She then went on to earn a BA in Mathematics from Washington College and her Master of Instruction at the University of Delaware (2005).
Over 40 years ago, Anne embarked on her professional journey as a teacher, devoting her life to children. She first taught physical education and coached field hockey at Bohemia Manor High School in Chesapeake City, MD. Anne dedicated over 30 years teaching math and then leading as the Math Department Chair at St. Mark's High School in Pike Creek, DE. She also attended St. Mark's as a teen and was part of the 1974 graduating class. Anne was a born leader; always putting others before herself. In addition to teaching, she enjoyed donating her time towards the Blue-Gold Foundation; loving the students and buddies with her whole heart. She helped lead the club as they fostered relationships between St. Mark's students and teenagers in the community with intellectual disabilities. Her love for Blue-Gold led to many hours at after school events raising money for the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with cognitive disAbilities (DFRC), enriching the lives of many Delawareans.
Outside of work, for many years, Anne and Gregg were their childrens' biggest fans as they explored the country attending numerous travel soccer tournaments. Anne graced us with her beautiful soprano voice while singing in the church choir at St. Mary of the Assumption for many years. Anne found peace and solitude at both the Delaware beaches and Ocean City, New Jersey where she and Gregg watched the surf, smelled the salty air and strolled the boardwalk. Anne and Gregg owned a beach house in Lewes, DE where they enjoyed many weekend getaways by themselves and with their children and grandchildren. Anne and Gregg also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with each other in St. Augustine, FL, St. Michael's, MD and Disney World. Once Anne was blessed with her grandsons, Noah and Miles, she poured all her love into them every chance she had. Anne and Gregg were able to join their children and grandsons on a trip to Disney World in April of 2019. Then, in 2021, their granddaughter, Dylan was born, and the happiest girl in the world shared many smiles and giggles with her Mom-Mom over this past year, keeping her spirits high.
Anne is survived by her husband, Gregg Edwin; daughter, Sherry Leigh Fagin (Mike); son, Adam Christopher Smith (Christine); grandchildren, Noah Douglas Fagin, Miles Greggory Fagin and Dylan Louise Smith; sister, Mary Grace Rollins; brother, Charles Elwood "Bub" Harrison (Linda "Missy"); brother, James Francis Harrison (Gina, deceased); brother, Jerry Harrison (Lisa)' and several nieces, nephews and members of her extended family.
In addition to her parents, Anne was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Jean Wright; father-in-law, Hobert Smith; and father-in-law, Lew Wright.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00pm on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:00am. Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery.
