Ethel Jensen Obituary

Ethel Katherine Jensen, 100, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She and her late husband, Aleck H. Jensen, were long-time Palmerton residents.

Born in Ridgewood, Queens County, New York, Ethel was the daughter of Daniel M. Pearson Sr. and Amelia (Poeppel) Pearson. She was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School, Queens College, and Columbia University Teachers' College.

When World War II ended, as an American Red Cross volunteer, Ethel worked as a dietitian for the U.S. Army in Manila, Philippines. One of her jobs there was to manage food service at the U.S. Army's Roosevelt Club in the war-torn city.

Ethel was a home economics teacher for over twenty years in New York City, at Northwestern Lehigh High School, and-for most of her career-at Palmerton Area High School.

In her retirement, she was a freelance writer, master sewer for her grandchildren, and community volunteer.

Ethel is survived by her daughter Diane Berry and husband Dean of Williamsburg, Virginia; son Steven of Palmerton; granddaughter Melanie Berry of Falls Church, Virginia; grandson Aleck Berry of Williamsburg, Virginia; niece Jane Rose and husband Dennis of Ballston Lake, New York. She was predeceased by her husband, sister Virginia and brother Daniel.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Mahoning Valley Nursing Home for their excellent and loving care of Ethel.

Services will be private. Condolences may be left at Legacy.com

Dear Steven and Diane, I am so sorry for your loss! It seems like only yesterday we played together and our mothers watched out the kitchen windows to check on us! Please accept my wishes for only good memories!

Mrs Jensen was my first home ec teacher at Northwestern, and my mom, Mary Knerr, succeeded her as Home Ec teacher at NLHS. She taught me how to make an apron. I know my mom stayed in touch with her over the years. My condolences to family as you grieve her loss.
