Robert Allison Johnson, born in Canandaigua, NY on September 8, 1928, died February 2, 2024 in Chapin, SC. He served in the First Armored Division during the Korean War and observed a nuclear bomb air burst test in Nevada. His business career was at the home office of MassMutual Life Insurance Company where he served on the Executive Council from which he retired in 1988 as a Senior Vice President. He was a Charter Life Underwriter, and held leadership positions in a number of community volunteer organizations. He was the author of two books, This Violent Land, a fact based novel about post-Civil War reconstruction and The Great Buddha Heist, an international thriller. Together with his wife, Suzanne, he co-edited Bitter Freedom, her great grandfather's Reconstruction journals. He leaves his beloved wife Suzanne of 72 years; daughters, Pamela Palmer, Carol Johnson, Elizabeth Drye and Cynthia Mease; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will be missed beyond measure.
His life will be celebrated at a memorial service at The Heritage at Lowman Chapel, 2101 Dutch Fork Road, Chapin, on April 3, 2024 at 1:00 PM. The family will have an interment at a later date in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
