Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Gretchen was preceded in death by her mother, Brenda Pfaehler, and her father, G. Thomas Pfaehler (Judy). She is survived by her loving brother, Seth Pfaehler (Nancy) of Madison, WI, along with a community of extended family and friends who cherished her dearly.

Gretchen's professional journey was marked by her deep passion for historic preservation. She dedicated her life to the thoughtful restoration of historic structures across the nation, including the restoration and preservation the iconic rotunda of the Wisconsin State Capitol. Her work was recognized at the highest level in 2024 when she was inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects - an honor she accepted with grace and an unwavering commitment to mentoring the next generation.
