Jim was a force of nature. A head of a plastics colorants firm, a banker, and others saw and said that.
I saw it starting in September 1984. I had been a project manager and capital equipment buyer. The invitation to join Packer was compelling due to its leading-edge molding area in Lawrence.
The first task for me was to manage-and after 90 days show a layout drawing for-raw materials handled in the plant´s east area. The aim was to stem rising overflow until a planned warehouse addition was done. Before 90 days elapsed I asked Jim and David to see the new layout in use. Teamwork and $5,000-most for racking-had things organized and flowing with an open space larger than 3 basketball courts. That area´s previous loss rate of colorants was 17% and of boxes was 4.5%. Both now under 0.1%. David gawked for a half hour. Jim looked for a few seconds and left.
Two weeks later I learned plans for the warehouse addition were torn up and I was Director of Purchasing.
Jim showed energy and genius interacting with executives of customers Kraft and General Foods and resin suppliers Allied, Union Carbide, DuPont, Solvay, Shell, and Exxon. Packer´s top line grew gradually and bottom line grew sharply across 1985, 1986, and 1987. Quality shot up (product returns and distribution shrinkage fell 95%) as costs fell (high volume raw materials´ prices dropped 35-40%).
In 1987 and 1988 concerns were noted by astute employees and consultants with IBM, Texas Instruments, and Pansophic. Many involved an ex-Andersen accountant, now VP of Finance, holding sway over Packer, divestiture efforts, and access to Jim. Jim insisted he could never hear a bad thing about that VP. Unfortunately, that VP proved unworthy of that trust. I and others left.
Jim and I talked some in the months and years after that. He relished stepping back from full bore managing and selling to have more time with family in Wisconsin.
Early 1994 did see concerns surface. Jim accepted help forming and from a new team and others at Goldsmith and Berry in righting the ship. Across two years they raised and got recognition for Packer´s prospects and value. They secured on-going operation of the Lawrence plant and added comfort for Jim´s retirement.
Jim was a force of nature.

Jim was a great friend. He and I played football together at Miami Beach High School. I was in the 8th grade. He was great. I was not. Many years passed before I saw him in Wisconsin. He never changed. Always courteous and funny. We played golf together and he was always picking the berries. Not so interested in the golf. He will be missed.

Hey Jim, I met you later in life and even bought your "third home" just a ways south of Lawrence, KS in 2012. Since then, we had a great time reminiscing over the land there, what some of your dreams were, and some locations for a future home would possibly be. I last saw you 4 months ago and we took one last ride over that property. You confided in me that this might be the last time we were together, but you were very interested in some projects I had going on and, as normal, wanted updates on any new developments. Jim, my friend, I will always value and remember our relationship and the many times we had together. We often laughed about who got the best deal on the land I bought from you, and I´m not sure that that was ever resolved between us; we always had a good laugh about that. I will always remember your entrepreneurial slant and all our good times! Farewell, for now, my good friend!!
