Andrew L. Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 27, 2023.
It is with our deepest sadness and sorrow that we announce that Andrew L. Mitchell, 92, of Greensboro, Maryland, passed away with his wife by his side at Compass Hospice in Centreville, Maryland on October 9, 2023 after a brief illness. He was born on February 4, 1931, in Wilmington, Delaware. Andrew, lovingly known as Andy, PopPop, Sonny, Uncle Andy, and Dad, will be deeply missed by everyone that knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife, Linda Mitchell (Steele), Andy is survived by Linda's son, Louis Summa (Karen) and their daughter, Leah Summa. He is also survived by his daughter, Donna Mitchell-Ignasz (Robin Burris) and her daughter, Lauren Riley and her son, Nathan Diaz; Andrew Mitchell Jr. and his children Ally, Gabrielle, and Talon Mitchell. He is also survived by his granddaughters Jessica Mitchell and her two sons, Ryder and Benjamin, and Angela Mitchell, both daughters of his late son, Ken Mitchell; Andy's brother, Larry Mitchell, and his eight children, along with their very large extended families; and Robert Mitchell, Greg Mitchell, Darin Mitchell, and David Mitchell and their large extended families, sons of Andy's late brother, Robert Mitchell.

Andrew was preceded in death by his mother, Stella Mitchell (Tomczyk), father, Andrew E. Mitchell, brother Robert Mitchell, and son Ken Mitchell and daughter-in-law Cindy Mitchell.

Andy was a remarkable individual who lived life to the fullest. He cherished his wife, Linda, their children, their grand kids and their dogs. His bond with his daughter was unbreakable, and they shared countless precious moments together. Andy had a natural talent for storytelling and took great pleasure in reminiscing about the wonderful experiences he had throughout his life. He possessed a sentimental nature and could often be seen shedding tears of joy over the simplest of things.

Andy had a wide range of interests and talents. He had a knack for fixing things and fearlessly took on any project that came his way. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, hunting for good deals, and had a deep love for music, especially Andrea Bocelli. Andy had a passion for boating and was an accomplished pilot in his earlier years. He was a true sun worshipper and enjoyed spending time at the beach or lounging in the back yard with his little dog by his side, always sporting a great tan. Andy loved a great meal, especially sweets, and was spoiled by his wife and daughter, as they always made him the things he loved the most. He had a very romantic side, and also expressed his opinions with unwavering honesty. In his younger days, he was an exceptional dancer, and he and Linda enjoyed many nights out on the town.

Handsome, suave, and charming, Andy was crowned Mr. Delaware in 1950, a testament to his years of working out and always being muscular and fit. He had an impeccable sense of style and always enjoyed dressing up for any occasion..

Andy attended Archmere Academy, where he proudly played football, as player #26 on the team. He later pursued higher education at Brown Vocational Technical School.

Andy honorably served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, demonstrating his unwavering dedication and commitment to his country.

Following his military service, Andy embarked on a successful career as a plumber, specializing in mechanical and electrical contracting. From 1955 to 1972, he contributed his expertise to countless projects, taking over a portion of his father's long time business, A.E. Mitchell & Sons, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Andy faithfully worshipped at a Catholic church, finding solace and strength in his religious beliefs.

A celebration of Andy's remarkable life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Compass Regional Hospice in Centreville, MD, the American Legion in Denton, Maryland, or the S.P.C.A in Georgetown, Delaware.

Andy Mitchell will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. His zest for life, kind heart, and unforgettable presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.

My darling Andy
I'm so lost without you we were together a lifetime.
There's not a day or night that goes by you are not with me.
We shared a full life of happiness and trails many moments of joy and sadness.
We were committed to each other to never part.
This is temporary one day we will be reunited.
The Lord said "My house has many mansions" I know you are preparing one for us.
So this is not good bye.
We will be together again
All my love,
Your wife Linda.

I know my world will never be the same without you, and I already miss you terribly. I pick up the phone every day to call you to hear your voice, or tell you about something good that happened, or just to say I love you. I look at pictures of us, just a few weeks ago and wonder if I'm just dreaming that you're really gone, but I saw you you slipping away, and will forever hold on to that last "I love you" and the look in your eyes that told me it would be ok. I'll miss you every second of every day until I see you again. Take good care of that big piece of my heart that you took with you, and I know you'll be keeping an eye on me. I love you, Daddy..forever and always.
