Barry McKay Obituary

October 17, 1929 - March 23, 2022 Barry John McKay, MD a beloved Internal Medicine physician passed away peacefully at his home in Rancho Santa Fe, CA on March 23, 2022.

Dr. McKay had a remarkable life story. He was born in the small fishing town of Thessalon, Ontario Canada on 10/17/1929 to a family of commercial fishermen. His ancestors, as far back as can be traced, were commercial fishermen; originating from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and later emigrated to the Canadian Great Lakes. His father Jack McKay purchased wilderness land on the shores of Lake Superior in region that became known as Gargantua Harbor, where he spent his youth working alongside his father and brother in the commercial fishing business. To make ends meet he would collect pulpwood along the shores of Lake Superior. He foresaw the destruction of the Great Lakes fishing industry due to the incursion of the lamprey eels and remarkably changed course of his life at age 30, returning to complete his education and eventually graduate from medical school at the University of Ottawa. He then moved to California to complete his residency training at the old LA County Hospital in Los Angeles. He eventually settled in Newport Beach where he practiced Internal Medicine for over 40 years and played competitive tennis, and enjoyed his other passions bridge, fishing and attending to his Koi fish.

He is predeceased by his parents Jack and Edith McKay and his sister Peggy McKay. He is survived by his brother Ian McKay and wife Kan Kai, and by his wife Roberta Hudson-McKay and his children Dianne McKay and husband Andrew King, Blair McKay and wife KayCee McKay, Debbie Pautsch (McKay) and husband Greg Pautsch, Gail-McKay Martin and husband Chris Martin, Ian McKay and wife Tsz yan McKay, Erin Cortell (McKay) and step daughter Michele Prevost; and his grandchildren Liam, Nora, Dan, Crystal, Brandon, Ashley, Sierra, Marshall, McKenna, Diane, Arianna, Shelby, Ian, Garran, Dylan and Ethan and great grandchildren Piper, Penelope and Benjamin.

Funeral services and burial will be held at Pacific View Mortuary in Corona Del Mar, CA at 10am on Saturday April 9.

Although it´s been a very long time, the memories of `our little group´ remain vivid, intact, and unforgettable. Special times ~ special moments ~ lots of humor.
Barry McKay ... a well respected physician, a devoted family man, a `great´ fisherman, an excellent tennis player, a superb chess and bridge player, a good friend to so many, and a very sweet soul!
Thank you Barry ... for all the lovely memories
