Katie Cromer Bradley, 68, widow of Marvin Lyle Bradley, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont.
Born November 1, 1955, in Clinton, SC, at Blalock Clinic, she grew up in Kinards, SC. Katie was the only child of the late Newton Edward Cromer and Mary Johnson Cromer.
Having graduated from Newberry High School (1973), she attended Newberry College (1973-1977) where she earned a B. A. in English as well as secondary and middle school language arts certification. During her years at Newberry College, she was a member of the JROTC auxillary group Angel Flight, of the KEY Club (president), and of the Bachman Honor Society. In 1986 she earned a Master in Education for Secondary Counseling and Guidance Services from Clemson University. In addition, she went on to earn 30+ credit hours in the designated area of administration. She obtained SC Gifted and Talented Endorsement, became a National Board Certified Teacher in Adolescent and Young Adult/English Language Arts (2002-2022), and earned SC AP English Literature and Composition Endorsement.
Her teaching career spanned a period of 36 years. She taught 2 years at Hudgens Academy, 1.5 years at Mid-Carolina Junior High School, 29 years at Greenwood High School, 1 year at Northside Middle High School, and 3 years at Cambridge Academy. She also served as a Prevention/Intervention Coordinator with the Newberry County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (1979-1981). After her public school retirement, she served as a private tutor for ELA and SAT preparation and as a facilitator for SAT workshops from 2012-2014.
Katie was actively involved in professional activities throughout her career. Over the years she wrote multiple secondary English curriculum guides. She supervised 4 student teachers, was the GHS Student Handbook Layout and Design Coordinator (2 years), English Dept. Katie and her late husband Marvin were best friends and soulmates. They taught together at Greenwood High from 1982 until Marvin's retirement. Nineteen years of marriage (2003-2022) were God's gift to them, and they enjoyed every minute of their lives together. Katie loved to have fun, help people, shop, create crafts, decorate for holidays, and travel. Her favorite trip was to Israel and Jordan where Will and she were baptized in the Jordan River. Nurturing and teaching students and mentoring colleagues benefitted many throughout her career. Her relationships with relatives, friends, and former students comforted her during her lifetime, especially during her ALS challenges over these past years.
Katie was a member of Sharon United Methodist church in Kinards and later Rehoboth United Methodist church in Greenwood. She also attended First Christian church in Greenwood.
She is survived by her son Will Metts and her grandson Fenway Metts of Greenwood and her step-son Justin Bradley (Ashley) and step-grandson Braxton Bradley of Cincinnati, Ohio.
