Sherma Fife-Garn Obituary

Sherma Arave Fife Garn, 94, passed away on January 24, 2025, after a fall due to causes incident to age. She was born on December 5, 1930, in Ogden, Utah, to Roy Ervin Arave and Velma Josephine Wilcox. Sherma grew up in Hooper, Utah, the youngest of five siblings: Don, Calvin, Carl, and Louise.

At the age of 17, Sherma married Don M. Johnston on March 30, 1948, in the Salt Lake City Temple. After their divorce, she married Thomas H. Fife, and their marriage was later sealed in the Logan Utah Temple. Tom passed away in 1985, and she married Darvel Garn on January 6, 2012, making their home in Providence, Utah.

Sherma's life was a testament to her talent, determination, and love. She was a gifted musician, teaching herself to play piano by ear at age 5, and she went on to share her musical gifts in countless ways throughout her life. Whether performing in local productions, teaching, or playing for hospital patients, music was a central part of her being. She also had a love for the arts, becoming a self-taught painter and enjoying and performing in musicals, theater, and drama.

A lifelong learner, Sherma was unafraid of new challenges. She worked as a realtor in the Logan area, where she was recognized as Realtor of the Year and became active in state and national real estate associations. She traveled the world, visiting Germany, France, England, Austria, Trinidad, and more, but always cherished returning home to her beloved family.

Sherma was deeply involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially serving in the Young Women's program, where she touched the lives of many. She also played the piano for many years at the Logan Regional Hospital and the Joseph Smith Building in Salt Lake City.

Family was the light of her life, and she was known for her unwavering faith, love of life, and her ability to bring people together with her warmth and generosity.

Sherma is preceded in death by her siblings and her beloved husband, Thomas H. Fife. She is survived by her children: Shanna Dawn Masters (Fred Scott Masters), Michele Johnson (Jeff Johnson), Gina Clegg-Hamilton (Ken R. Hamilton), Darrin Don Johnston (Sue Lynn Voran), Paul Thomas Fife, and Jason Roy Fife (Angela Bentley).

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 7, 2025, at 12:00 pm at the Cobblestone 1st Ward meetinghouse, 420 West 100 North, Providence, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the services from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Interment will follow at the Providence City Cemetery, where Sherma will be laid to rest beside her husband, Thomas H. Fife.
