Catherine "Cathy" L. Giesselmann (Gutschow)
September 8, 1930 - January 11, 2024
Cathy Giesselmann, 93, of Fremont, NE passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont. She was born September 8, 1930, in Blair, NE to Chris and Marie (Nielsen) Gutschow.
She grew up on the family farm north of Blair, BE, but spent a lot of time in Blair with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Thorvald Jorgensen. She was the youngest of eight children. Cathy graduated from Blair High School in 1948.
Cathy met her husband, Merle, at the Washington County Fair. He was pitching in the fair's baseball tournament. They got married March 5, 1950 in Blair. Shortly after their wedding day, they started farming east of Arlington, NE. On their Washington County farm, they raised cattle, crops and started raising their two children, Ruth and Ron. Merle preceded her in death on January 4, 2003.
She was a lifelong member of Lutheran churches in Blair and Fremont. Upon moving to Fremont, she was involved in church, University of Nebraska Extension Clubs, card clubs, quilting, gardening and Danish cooking.
Cathy is survived by her daughter, Ruth (Steve) Hespen and son, Ron (Teresa) Giesselmann, all of Fremont; grandchildren: Jill (Steve) Hespen of Fremont, Mechelle Hespen of Fremont, Katie Giesselmann of Fremont, Matt (Jill) Giesselmann of Lincoln, Holly (Allyn) Gonsor of Lincoln and Joe Giesselmann of North Bend; great-grandchildren: Hannah Havekost, Ben Havekost, Ethan Havekost, Charli Gonsor, Nora Gonsor and Henry Giesselmann.
Other survivors: sister-in-law, is Harriet Bloemker; special nieces, Connie Custard, Ellen Hansen, and many other nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; aunt, Elizabeth and uncle, Thorvald; and seven siblings: Jennie Larsen, Fred Gutschow, Bill Gustchow, Beulah Johnson, Margaret Metzler, Erna Engelke and Chris Gutschow.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., January 16, 2024, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont, NE. Family visitation will start at 9:30 a.m. before the service. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont at 1:00 PM following the luncheon at the Church.
