Dorothy Jean Whitmore January 24, 1936 - December 18, 2023 Dorothy Jean Whitmore, 87, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa. She was born on January 24, 1936, to Raymond and Faye Moore. She grew up in Mondamin, Iowa. Dorothy was working at Harold's Coffee House when she met the love of her life and best friend Harvey Whitmore. Dorothy and Harvey were united in marriage on August 8, 1953. They settled in Council Bluffs, Iowa and started a family. Later they moved to Logan, Iowa and opened Whit's Café which they ran for several years. After selling the café, they moved to Pisgah, Iowa and opened Whit's Drive-in. After a few years, they sold it and bought the local Gamble store in Logan. They managed that store together for many years as well as an antique store. Dorothy's greatest joy in life was raising her five boys: Steven, Terry, David, Ronnie and Bob. They were truly the loves of her life. Dorothy taught them the importance of family and hard work. She effortlessly juggled the responsibilities of a nurturing mother, managing her household and being a helpmate to Harvey working alongside him at their many stores. Dorothy, like her husband Harvey, was an entrepreneur and enjoyed serving and interacting with the public. During those years, her favorite past times were cooking, taking care of her boys, hosting friends and antiquing with Harvey. Their home was always a gathering spot to play pitch and pinocle with friends. After Harvey's passing on May 28, 1999, her son Terry became her caregiver and took excellent care of her through the years until her death. During her retirement years, Dorothy worked in the kitchen at the Logan Magnolia School and enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. She enjoyed nothing more than visits from them all and hearing about their life updates and adventures. Each of them brought her great joy and laughter! Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Faye Moore; husband, Harvey Whitmore; siblings, Curt Moore, Glen Moore, Katheryn Moore and Kenneth Moore; daughter-in-law, Patti Whitmore; and grand-daughter, Cari. She is survived by her children, Steven Whitmore (Linda), Terry Whitmore, David Whitmore (Marjel), Ronnie Whitmore and Robert "Bob" Whitmore; grandchildren, Ben, Brianne, Kim, Jennifer (Sean), Jolene (Jake), Tommy (Halie), Alexis, Joseph, Annabella and Michael; great-grandchildren Taylor, Alex, Bailee, Kameron, Gabrielle, Brayden, Sophia and Emilano; brother, Bob Moore; brother- in-law, Alan Whitmore (Judy); and other nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A funeral service was held on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Logan Christian Church in Logan, Iowa. Pastor Kyle Drown presided over the service. The recorded musical selections were "Long Black Train" by Josh Turner, "Amazing Grace" by Alan Jackson, "The Old Rugged Cross" by Alan Jackson and "Forever and Ever, Amen" by Randy Travis.
