Helene Prokop Obituary

Helene Repka Prokop
Helene Repka Prokop, age 101, beloved wife of the late Louis S. Prokop, died on November 19, 2024. Helene was born in Bridgeport, CT, daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Repka with elder siblings Andrew Repka Jr., Anne Russo and Betty Pistey. She has resided in Huntington since 1962.
She graduated from Harding High School, attended the University of Bridgeport and was a graduate of the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1944. Helene practiced at the hospital and was a life member of its Alumnae Association. She worked as an Occupational Health nurse in many local industries and at various State Technical Schools.
A longtime member of St. Lawrence Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and member of the Altar Society and Choir. Helene was a professed member of the Third Order Carmelites for 37 years.
In 1979, a group of five mothers who had experienced the death of a young child started a chapter of The Compassionate Friends. The Compassionate Friends is a worldwide association that provides support to bereaved parents. For years the Bridgeport chapter met at the Catholic Center each month with the support of Father Stephen Barrett. The five mothers were: Joyce Sweeney, Margaret Stapleton, Maureen Laitres, Jan Boyle and Helene Prokop. The latter was Co-leader and Editor of the monthly newsletter for twenty years which was distributed to over two hundred parents. In addition to the foregoing, Helene was a charter member of the Olde Ripton Garden club, a charter member of the Shelton Historical Society and an assistant Brownie and Girl Scout leader.
She is survived by her son, Mark Stephen Prokop, daughter Clare Prokop Baia, husband Pat and daughter Lauren Prokop Bergemann, husband Michael, eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. A beloved son, Dion, passed away in 1977.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2024 at St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Rd., Huntington, with burial following at Lawn Cemetery, Lane Street Huntington.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dion R. Prokop Memorial at St. Joseph's High School, 2320 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull, CT 06611 and also at: www.SJCADETS.org/give. I am sorry for your loss. I am grateful for Helene´s founding of the Compassionate friends group along with my mother and Mrs. Stapleton and others. It did her a lot of good and they always reached out to other parents who suffered similar losses.
