Troy Berry Obituary

Troy D. "T-Bone" Berry

Findlay - Troy D. "T-Bone" Berry, 53 of Findlay passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021. He was born January 22, 1968 in Coshocton, Ohio to Richard "Dick" and Dixie (Slaughter) Berry.

Troy met the love of his life, Dawn (Mellott), while attending The University of Findlay. They married September 10,1994 and were married 26 years.

They had two children, Nicholas Berry and Madison Berry. He is survived by two brothers; Trevor of Coshocton and Trent (Toni) of Warsaw and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by father Richard Berry.

He graduated from The University of Findlay in 1992 with a bachelor of arts in English and in 1999 he earned his Masters in Education.

In 2017 the Class of 1992, along with friends and family of Troy established the Troy Berry '92 Athletic Scholarship Endowment Fund at The University of Findlay to honor the achievements of baseball and coach. Troy retired as the head coach in 2013. During his tenure he finished as the all-time leader in wins with 211. The Oilers set 12 team season records including wins (28) in 2008. He coached the Oilers to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament twice, reaching the finals in 2005 and again in 2008. He coached 41 All-GLIAC and 6 All-Region performers, including one NCAA All-American.

In 2014 the GLIAC baseball coaches voted to name an award on his behalf. The "Troy Berry" award is presented annually to a baseball student-athlete who combines outstanding character and leadership on the field and in the classroom. The candidate is a role model for his teammates, school and community. He was an assistant coach for 9 years before taking over as head coach. He was an outfielder for the Oilers from 1989-92 and was a four-time letter-winner. He ranked in the top ten in UF history for hits, runs batted in and runs scored in a career upon graduating.

Troy was an inspiration both as a person and fellow coach for all the time I coached against his teams. I feel blessed that I had the chance to know him and always considered him a friend as well as a adversary in our arena of college baseball. He will be missed and my prayers go out to Dawn, Nicholas and Madison. I am glad that I had the chance to visit with Troy recently and he was a real joy to be around.
