Martha Reapsome Obituary

Martha Gray Reapsome, age 90, of Downers Grove, IL passed away peacefully on June 22, 2022. Martha is survived by her daughter Sara (Paul) Schmidt of Yarrow Point, WA, her grandchildren, Catherine and John and six beloved nieces. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jim and son John. Martha was born on January 13, 1932 in Louisville, KY to Ella and Leslie Gray. She received a BA in Education from Western Kentucky University and MS in Anthropology from University of Kentucky.

Martha had a long and useful career as a teacher, trainer, facilitator, and mentor. First on staff with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, in the 1960's she joined a new organization, Neighborhood Bible Studies. She continued her involvement with NBS/QPlace her whole life, launching hundreds of Bible study groups and mentoring staff and facilitators. Martha and Jim wrote numerous Bible study guides, selling over 640,000 copies. She was a pastor's wife at churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. Retiring to Oak Trace in Downers Grove, Martha organized English language tutoring and co-facilitated a Bible study.

Martha was an avid bird watcher, keen Scrabble player, loved puzzles and tending her perennial flower garden. She was a devoted wife and mother. A gifted encourager, she enriched hundreds of lives with her tenacious Christian witness and wise counsel. Her friends and family will always remember her as so cheerful, so perceptive, so invested in others, so kind-hearted.

Dear Sara, I knew both your dad and mom and have just now learned of your mom's death earlier this year. Both your parents faithfully sent me personal notes of encouragement after receiving my updates (I am a missionary caregiver). Just wanted to say my life is richer for having known both of them and I'm sure you feel their loss every day. I pray comfort for you, Karen Carr, Barnabas International

Martha was such an inspiration to both John and I , but I particularly learned so much from her about reaching out to others, as she hosted the lunches she and Jim had in their home for new people at CBC. It is a role that I would fill in our church plants. She also gave me a love for both Women´s Bible Studies and reaching out to others through Neighborhood Bible Studies. It was a blessing to have Martha (and Jim) in our lives as mentors in our early years of ministry. And when they lost their precious son, John.... We learned how to grieve from them. We are so grateful that God placed them in our lives.
Our love and deepest sympathies to Sarah and her family as they grieve so great a loss. Praying for the LORD to be their Comfort and Strength.
* we appreciated being able to view the memorial service, as well.

Martha was my mentor and friend. She encouraged me when I took steps of faith with Neighborhood Bible Studies and later with Q Place. She always believed God would equip me to do what He had called me to do even when I struggled to believe it. Her faith helped me to have faith and helped me to keep stepping out of my comfort zone and follow where He led me. Martha also prayed for me in all the years that I have been in ministry with Neighborhood Bible Studies / Q Place. She would email me and tell me what she was praying and it was always such a big encouragement to me. Only God knows how much of an impact in other people's lives God has had through me because of her prayers. I look at her as an example and I ask God to help me to live my life faithfully like she did. Martha, you will be missed, but I smile when I think of you with our Lord and Savior.

The picture is as I remember Martha. She was such a kind, faithful and loving woman, with a gentle way about herself that oozed her love for Jesus. She and Jim were important influencers in my early life with the Lord.

Martha Reapsome was a dear friend and prayer warrior for my family. I will miss her! I was able to be in Illinois for Jim's funeral, but I'm sorry, I'm not able to be there for Martha's. May God be with you and your family, Sara. You have been a good and faithful daughter!
