John Sullivan Obituary

John Fitzpatrick Sullivan, MD, (1970 to 2022) Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology, passed away on Wednesday, June 29 after a two-year battle with cancer. John was a graduate of Loyola Academy, Wilmette, Williams College and became a mental health worker at Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Brighton. He then obtained his MD from UMass Chan Medical School and entered the UMass Chang combined neuropsychiatry residency program, where he quickly became known for his penetrating questions, unflappability, and ability to see the humor in every situation. After graduating from the neuropsychiatry program in 2012, John spent five years in outpatient neuropsychiatry at Brigham and Women's Hospital (now Mass General-Brenham). In December 2017, John returned to UMass as an attending psychiatrist on the 8E medical psychiatric unit, taking over as unit medical Director in 2020. He also frequently worked as night and weekend physician at the PTRC psychiatry unit and was part of the UMMHC Neuropsychiatry Clinic Attending group. In addition to his work at UMass Chan, John was an annual lecturer at the Harvard CME course, Neuropsychiatry: A Comprehensive Update.

John is survived by his wife Patricia "TC" and their three children: Jack, Isabel and Nicholas, his mother Maurice Ann Wieland Sullivan, and many uncles, aunts, and cousins. John was preceded in death by his father John D. Sullivan

The John F. Sullivan, MD Memorial Lectureship in Neuropsychiatry has been established. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of John may be made to UMass Chan Medical School in support of the Department of Psychiatry.
