Thinking of you Sherry and remembering Sam. I know you miss him dreadfully and also so very proud of the admirable way you've managed carrying on without him. I know you think of him almost as if he is still with you, in the house the two of you created with you beautiful garden you both loved so much. I think he is there in some fashion and when you talk to him, he hears you. That gives me comfort knowing his love and affection remains real in your life. Never stop talking to him.

Thank you, to all who wrote. Sometimes I reread them all for comfort. It will only be two years since I lost him in July but to me it seems an eternity. It helps to know that others recognized his worth and miss him too.

As Christmas 2023 approaches I'm reminded of Christmas 2021at Kelly's and John's home. His parting advice as my husband and I left his house on Christmas eve, "Be sure to have a substantial snack on Christmas day before arriving at Kelly's for dinner." "Why?" I asked. He replied, "The dinner will be delicious but it's always served at least two hours after the appointed hour." He was right, dinner was fabulous and served at 9pm when planned for 6-7pm. After following Sam's advice a wonderful time was had by all 12 of us! Though late, Kelly's braver than I who would never even attempt to serve 12 people on Christmas. Merry Christmas Sam and thanks for the advice!

Anniversary
As she lay dying his face became clear after many months of fog.
"Hello, Darling, he said.
She turned slightly on her pillow, looking up at him.
Remembering again that she always had to look up - as he was a foot taller.
You came! she said aloud, as he smiled down at her.
The people in the room looked puzzled.
You knew I´d be back for you, he said.
I´ve been lost without you.
Lost no more, he said leaning over and kissing her forehead. Are you ready? We can leave anytime.
Already her transformation had begun . . . . she smiled - taking his hand,
I´ve never been more ready, she replied, unless it was 55 years ago when we started.
A light breeze moved through the garden, nodding flowers.
Soft crying was heard in the room, her family mourning their loss. They, too young to understand that her life had only just begun, again.

On the one year anniversary of Sam's passing, I'm reminded that, one good thing to come of it. Sam and mine and Sherry"s younger sister, Navar, and our brother, Doss, all passed in successive years, 2020, 2021, and 2023. Through those terrible times Sherry and I renewed our relationship that had become intermittent and somewhat distant. Now we are closer than at any point after we both left the family unit more than 40 years ago. I'm still re covering from these loses, if one ever does. I'm grateful for my big sister and for Sam who lover her dearly.

Thank you. All who called, wrote cards and letters, and held us in your thoughts and prayers. All of us who loved him, appreciate your kindness, remembering who he was to you. He was my best friend, my teacher in many things, confidant, role model for children and grandchildren and he brought gentle to go in front of man. Four months have passed. . . He lives in my heart.

It all began in Everett's pond.
I meet Sam bass fishing in a small pond tucked away in Waxhaw. There, I also meet Sammy and Ms. Cricket learning at art of fishing.
From there Sam invited me to join him and his friend Durwood to fish at the Outerbanks. We ended up on Davis Island. We caught gray trout all day and the top of my feet took in way too much sun.
Sam and Durwood commenced to sing sacred hymns. I joined in; however, they shared with me that I wasn´t of any added value - you can´t sing was their consensus.
As many know Sam, he wasn´t one to leave matters along. Soon I got a call from Sam saying he had made an appointment to meet George Lynn, guest Music Director at MPBC. George agreed to provide me with voice training on Monday evenings at 5 p.m. George agreed to take another student, Rhonda, a teenager neighbor with a spectacular voice and talent. Rhonda went on to study music at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, The alma mater of George Lyn and Alice Berman.
When George left his post at MPBC he introduced me and Rhonda to Alice Berman, then retired. We had beautiful relationship for almost twenty years.
That OBX fishing trip produced many new loves in my life - Rhonda, Ms. Berman, OBX surf fishing (still going every year), choral music (still singing) and of course Sam.
It was the most productive fishing venture I ever took.
Thanks Sam. See you at choir practice before you know it.

Dear Sherry,
Thank you for your beautiful memorial to Sam. He was a wonderful human being and one of the best "creators of community" we have ever met. He engaged everyone he encountered in a friendly way and was interested in all things--people, ideas, animals, plants, the environment, and most of all--justice. The world is a better place for his having been here and we will miss him. We send Love and feel for your loss. Lane and Nancy Lasater

Sherry, a lovely eulogy. Sam was my first real estate attorney in the early 70s; I regret he was not for my entire tenure as a Realtor. I am saddened by his passing; he will always have a special place in my heart. All the best to you.
