DOUGLAS SEALE Obituary

SEALE, Douglas Carlton Passed away on March 5, 2022, in Sudbury, MA, while receiving hospice care following a 2015 diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD). He is survived by his loving wife and partner of 45 years, Emarie Pope; his son, Lt. Col. Soren Seale, JAG Corps, Massachusetts National Guard (Denneese); four grandchildren; his sister Jan Rose Greene (Dan); and was predeceased by younger brother, Steven. Doug was born on August 17, 1949 to Bessie and Grant Seale in Harlan, KY, and when he was 8, moved to Rose Hill, VA. Graduating from University of TN with a B.A., Philosophy, Doug completed his M.A. and received his Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1981 from University of Florida (UF). Doug received a Kellogg Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Agriculture and the Humanities at UF. He built a curriculum that combined farming, ecology, food production, ethics, and literature. This would set the course for his lifelong interest in environmental ethics. Later, he founded the Boston Computer Society's Environmental Group and the Environmental Book Group at Sudbury Valley Trustees. He served in multiple leadership positions for non-profit organizations. Among his other interests were travel, birding, and writing. After many years in IT Architecture in financial services, retiring as Senior Vice President, Doug returned to his passion of teaching. He taught philosophy at Framingham State University and created a course in Environmental Ethics. Those who knew Doug spoke of his dry humor. He was a loving father and husband, caring teacher, esteemed colleague, and lifelong learner. A Celebration of Life will be held in Spring 2023 in Marlborough, MA.
