Kathleen Mele Obituary

Kathleen Ann Mele passed away on February 25, 2024 after a short but hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born on April 17, 1962 to the late Nicholas J. Mele and Joan Dempsey Mele. Kathy was a graduate of Pittsfield High School, Springfield Technical Community College and MCLA.

Kathy had a long career as a Radiologic Technologist and Operations Manager for Berkshire Medical Center Radiology, retiring in 2021. Kathy loved to travel; she and her travel partner, Gloria Gero, traveled around the world and made many great memories. Kathy was always very active. She played golf, biked, hiked, kayaked, snow shoed and recently started playing pickleball.

Kathy leaves her husband of 32 years, John D. Coffey. She also leaves a brother, Bill Mele and sister-in-law Susie of Mashpee, MA; one sister, Mary Shook and husband, Peter; two nieces, Kanga (Sara) Collard of San Diego and Kaitlyn Shook of West Stockbridge and one nephew Kevin Shook of Pittsfield. Kathy also leaves her best friends, her beloved golden retrievers, Stella & Dempsey. Her goldens were the light of her life.

FUNERAL NOTICE: In keeping with Kathy's wishes, services will be private. Donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the Flynn & Dagnoli-Bencivenga Funeral Home, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. The family would like to thank the staff at the David Phelps Cancer Center. We would also like to thank Kathy's dear friends who rallied around her during her illness. Their kindness and concern helped us through this difficult time. May she rest in peace. To add to the Book of Memories, please visit www.flynndagnolifuneralhomes.com

Mary, Bill and family,
I was so shocked to read about Kathy's passing. I remember her as that little girl playing in the neighborhood, so long ago. Sending good thoughts to all of you at this difficult time.

When I think of Kathy, I think of her love for her dogs, her beloved New York Yankees, her bike rides, her love for ice cream, her travels around the globe and I especially think about the best supervisor I ever had while at BMC. She was fair and she was always there if you needed her. She listened. I'm thankful I got to chat with her last summer at Tanglewood where she was volunteering. She told me about her new dog Dempsey, and she always asked about my grandsons that played sports being that she loved all sports as well. May she rest in peace with all her golden retrievers!
