William Sterne Obituary

STERNE, William

Augustus "Billy"

William A. "Billy" Sterne died peacefully at home on January 25, 2025. He was born in Atlanta, GA, to Augustus H. "Billy" Sterne and Helen Hopkins Sterne on September 19, 1942.

He attended Christ the King School, Marist High School and the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

Billy and his wife of 58 years, Jane, made Atlanta, GA, their home for the bulk of their lives, where they raised two daughters, Beth and Catherine.

Following in his father's footsteps, Billy took on a career in banking that began at Citizens and Southern Bank. Later, he would transfer to the Trust Company Bank of Georgia (later called SunTrust Bank and now Truist), where he worked for 20+ years. While serving as Senior Vice President and the Head of Trust and Investment Management for New Business, his team of eight would set records in production. He retired from SunTrust as Executive Vice President of the Trust Department in Hilton Head, SC, in 2006.

Billy served on the boards of the University of Georgia Foundation, the Lovett School, the Capital City Club and Peachtree Golf Club, where he served as President.

Billy and Jane retired to Hilton Head, SC, where they lived for 20 years. Their retirement years offered them many good times on the golf course at Sea Pines Country Club where Billy made lasting friendships. He enjoyed successes too. Billy was a three-time club champion. He shot his age at 68. And, in his career, he had four holes-in-one.

Billy was predeceased by his wife, Jane Reynolds Sterne. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Carroll Sterne and Catherine Sterne Fleetwood (Thomas); granddaughters, Caroline Fleetwood and Elizabeth Fleetwood; brother, Carroll Sterne; and sisters, Helen Anderson, Augusta Sterne and Nancy Bowden.

The funeral service will be held at Christ the King Cathedral in Atlanta, GA, with date TBD.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cristo Rey Atlanta (cristoreyatlanta.org).

I observed Mr. Stern over the years as a club member (my date of admission to CCC was also 1965) and as a lawyer. His passing is especially poignant for me. The passing of an icon is especially sad.

I just watched the recording of Billy´s funeral service at Christ the King, as I wanted to hear his old friend´s remarks once again, particularly about his kindness that was much appreciated by a nervous new employee. Yes, he was known as Billy to us all, not Mr. Sterne!

I will always be grateful to "Billy" for giving me a ride to my boss' (Jenner Wood) mother's funeral service many years ago. Had he not let me ride with him/them, I would not have been able to attend - it meant so very much to me - just an admin. assistant. He was a good friend of my boss and a fine gentleman. I am so sorry for your loss!
