Nathan Hendricks Obituary

HENDRICKS, III, Nathan VanMeter

Nathan VanMeter Hendricks III died on December 27, 2024, of natural causes after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease and dementia. "Pete" was born to Nathan Van Meter Hendricks and Ella Lee Ward Hendricks in Decatur, Georgia, on December 16 1943. The family later moved to New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey, because of his father's work for various oil companies that later became Exxon Corporation.

Pete graduated from the Pingry School in New Jersey, Washington and Lee University in 1966, where he was a member of the Sazaracs a cappella singing group and Beta Theta Pi. Pete later obtained a law degree from Washington and Lee Law School in 1969. He was a valuable member if his undergraduate baseball teams and subsequently played in the summer leagues on Cape Cod.

After graduation he came South to practice law at several Atlanta firms before founding his own firm, specializing in real estate, zoning and government permitting. In 1972, Peter married Kathryn Barnes of Griffin, Georgia, and she enjoyed watching the lengthy ritual required to get a successful lawyer dressed every morning as he attended to all the details that produced elegant old school results! The Hendricks welcomed Nathan VanMeter Hendricks IV in 1982 and Seaton Grantland Hendricks in 1984.

The 1980s and 1990s were booming times in Atlanta real estate and Pete was right in the middle of much of the boom. He guided many big corporations in their growth, including Kimberly Clark's headquarters move, UPS's worldwide headquarters decision and Hobart's major transactions. Additionally, Peter was integral to Northpointe Mall and Glen Lake Office Development, Marta's North Rail Line and mixed-use development at Lindberg and many other smaller transactions with clients who invariably became great friends.

Pete and a partner bought Starrsville Plantation in Convington, Georgia, in 1982. This Plantation became a focal point for business and personal socializing. He always had a Labor Day Dove Shoot for clients and friends, and through the years enjoyed shooting ducks, turkey and especially quail. Quail hunting required special dogs bred and trained for the sport, so Sister came up from Claxton, Georgia, to support that passion and take over his heart. The tenth generation of Sister's heirs was born in May 2023. Starrsville and these dogs were the perfect excuse to teach his children the glories of this sport.

Baseball was another passion that Pete reveled in. He first had to make his wife learn all the rules and keep score. He then got to become friends with various Atlanta Braves team members who needed real estate legal help. Finally, his greatest pleasures came with coaching his sons' Buckhead Little League baseball teams, which triumphantly won the Major League title in 1994.

Pete greatly enjoyed his connections to All Saints' Church, the Huff 'N Puffs, the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, the Nine O'Clocks, the Society of the Cincinnati, the Order of the Purple at the University of the South, and a member of Highlands, NC's Wildcat Country Club. In 1979, he was able to broker a deal between the Fritz Orr family and the campers of Camp Merrie-Woode in Sapphire, NC, making it possible for the campers to buy the camp and operate it successfully from that time.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to any of the above non-profit organizations. A funeral service will be held at three o'clock on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 634 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30308.

Kathy, Nat, and Grantland,
It is now June 2025, and I have just learned of Pete´s passing. I´m heartbroken.
Pete was a dear friend and mentor to me, beginning in 1998 when I started my career in real estate. We first met when I hired him to rezone my very first land deal on Old Ivey Road near Hal´s in Atlanta. That project marked the beginning of a friendship and professional bond that would span over two decades.

I will always be grateful for the 26 years I shared with Pete, his family, and friends-especially the many special times at Starsville Plantation. It was there that I met many of Pete´s close friends and clients, people he was always eager to introduce and proud to bring together.

Though I am deeply saddened that I will no longer see my friend on this side of heaven, I take comfort in the hope that we will be reunited again in glory.

With heartfelt sympathy,

Henry

I had the pleasure of working with Pete on several zoning issues in NPU B. He was always professional, thorough and often noted with some hilarity the ridiculousness of certain positions of the applicants. A good man always. He will be missed.
