Richard Johnson Obituary
Richard Charles Johnson, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, in Peoria, Arizona, at the age of 78. Born on May 2, 1946, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Richard lived a life full of purpose, passion, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved son, David Johnson, his father, Charles Johnson, and his mother, Javerna Davis, as well as his sisters, Mary Jo Johnson and Judy Lund. Their memories will forever remain a guiding light in the lives of his surviving family members, who include his devoted wife of 59 years, Kathryn Johnson; his daughter, Jacquelyn Johnson; his granddaughter, Alisia Johnson; his grandson, Adam Johnson; and his siblings, Patricia Johnson and Chuck Johnson. Along with many nieces and nephews.
Richard married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Lindstrom, in Mounds View, MN on Oct 23rd, 1965. He proudly served in the Navy as a flight engineer and continued his dedication through many years in the reserves. His military service instilled in him the values of discipline, respect, and camaraderie, which he carried into all aspects of his life. Richard's life was marked by an unwavering commitment to service.
Professionally, Richard was a gifted commercial contractor, owning his own contracting company for many years. His work was not just a job but a passion that allowed him to build lasting relationships and contribute to his community. Those who worked alongside him admired his tenacity, creativity, and integrity.
When he wasn't working, Richard found joy in the great outdoors where he spent summers at the cabin he built on Rabbit Lake in Crosby, Minnesota, a place that brought him immense happiness with lots of good times and fond memories shared with friends and family. Fishing in the serene waters during the summer months became a cherished tradition for him, and his love for nature and time spent in the navy was reflected in his favorite quote: "Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning. Red sky at night, sailors delight." This adage served as a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of life, something Richard embraced wholeheartedly.
As the seasons changed, so did Richard's surroundings; he spent his winters in Peoria, Arizona, where he enjoyed the warmth and sunshine with family and friends. His vibrant spirit and sunny disposition were a source of joy for everyone around him, and he had a natural ability to uplift those he encountered.
Richard's journey, however, was not without its challenges. in his later years, he battled dementia, with many other health issues, a tremendous struggle that he faced with courage and dignity. His family remained by his side, providing unwavering support and love, and they are grateful for the moments they shared, even amidst the difficulties. He was fortunate to have his wife's devotion as she never left his side.
To honor Richard's life and legacy, a celebration of his life will be held in Minnesota at a later date. This gathering will serve as an opportunity for family and friends to come together, reminisce, and pay tribute to the man who touched so many lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made in Richard's name to organizations that support dementia research and care, ensuring that his spirit continues to help others in need or to plant a tree as he believed in the beauty and future that trees give for the future of our planet. He especially loved pine trees.
Richard Charles Johnson will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his kindness, love of family, and zest for life. His memory will live on through the stories shared, the laughter echoed, and the love that he fostered within his family and community. Rest in peace, Dick.
