Dear Nicki & family - my deepest condolences. At Powerco we first heard of Dave's passing early on Monday morning, and were absolutely shocked and stunned given the last we had seen him happy and cheerful on the Friday prior had been just like any other.
I've only known Dave for the last year and a bit he worked our Wellington office, but over that time he became a bit of an anchor for our new but small electricity team. I was always struck with how genuinely warm and friendly he was to everyone - as he always took the time to connect and check in with everyone, he seemed to know and remember even the most minor things about our lives like how things were going with the garden, who was away travelling etc. Always keen for a yarn - it seemed he could talk at length on any range of topics - from his daughters (whom he was obviously immensely proud of), car and bunny issues, the Wellington bus routes, a fish and chip store he found in Tauranga, to detailed discussions on the pros/cons of overhead line or underground options to 110kV circuit to Putaruru or the triggering of thyristor valves. He seemed such a wealth of knowledge on everything, and always tried to bring fresh and practical perspectives to his work and system issues. It seemed rare that there would be a topic that he didn't have experience in, or wouldn't be able to comment on without a glint in the eye or a poke of the elbow.
Dave was just a genuine good bloke and it is so sad that he was taken away so suddenly. We miss him dearly and our thoughts are with you.

Like Roger Dacombe-Bird, I went to Viard College with David too. I was shocked to hear that David passed away and sincerely pass on my condolences to his whanau. We were a year group of incredibly diverse students and I remember David as someone who could relate well to all. Po mihimihi David.

I'm greatly saddened to hear of Dave's passing. I met Dave at Transpower in the mid 90s when he was working in the HVDC section and I was a graduate engineer in Operations Planning. He was a lot of fun and very knowledgeable. I kept up with him through various career changes and moves around the industry, and last saw him at an EEA event in Auckland I think a year or two ago. I'll miss him, taken way too soon.

It very sad thing for me hearing of Dave's passing. He has been a reoccurring presence in my life since university. We shared a connection through being Railways Bursars, and along with Peter Couchman, flatted in the same street, Picton Ave. Dave was inspirational at telling lecturers what he thought.

What a loss. The Energynews article does not mention Dave's amazing wit and humour nor his positiveness and honesty. Dave would say what he thought without fear but never to hurt or upset others. Often he would be laughing at his own humanness.
When working on the HVDC link in 1990 we had to perform faults on the transmission network to check all was working as designed. Advisers from the USA recommended expensive live line equipment. Dave in his very practical way set the faults up with piano wire, a dive weight, trailer spring loaded hitch, some nylon rope and a rubber mat all purchased from the local hardware and music shops. Priceless. When we met he was often talking of his girls and was so proud of them and pleased to be a father.

A thoroughly good bloke...having worked with Dave in the NZED days, during his time at Transpower and more recently on projects with Powerco, he always was lots of fun and brought a unique perspective to projects he was working on! His passion, humour and energy will be missed. Our condolences to Dave's family....

Condolences to the family for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. I have engaged with Dave over a number of years from his days at Transpower. A pragmatist with a smile always and sense of humour for any situation. A great loss to our engineeering fraternity.

Stunned and saddened. He's left us way too soon. Dave was my manager at Transpower when I was a graduate and I will always remember him as someone who was generous with his time, but also never afraid to call a spade a spade. He will be missed throughout the industry.

Deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Dave's passing. I was fortunate to meet Dave at Viard College. He was a great friend at school and in the years afterwards. Dave was a key figure in our youthful activities that included road trips, pizza bars and police acquaintances. I have very fond memories of Kinloch, Nelson and the Hillman Hunter. Happy days but we all had to grow up and Dave developed into the smart, witty and clever man who was always upbeat and great fun to be around. He will be sorely missed but all our lives are richer for knowing him.
Sincere condolences to Nicky, Sarah and Lizzie and to Andy and Francis and their families.

Dave was one of the genuine good guys. We worked, flatted and went to University together. He thought about others, thought outside the box, liked to have fun and seldom let things get him down....a really genuine good bloke.
Dave, your passing has sent shock waves through us all, you have left a hole in our hearts and made us smile and laugh as we've reminisced our times together. RIP my friend
