Gary Herman Surratt of Hampstead, North Carolina departed this life on July 3, 2022 after a short but fierce battle with cancer.
Gary was predeceased by his father, Francis Beaumont Surratt, and he was survived by his remarkable mother, Arlene Drye Surratt and his loving sister, Frances Williams. He also leaves behind his friend and uncle, David Surratt, and many beloved cousins.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Anita Surratt, and their three adoring children; Robin Long (Chris), Caryn Wyatt, and Brian Surratt (Jennifer Sadler). Gary is also survived by 4 grandchildren; Brittany Williams (Zach), Cameron Ferguson, Skylar Wyatt, Colby Burcham, and 3 great grandchildren.
Gary was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He loved his family dearly, and to his children he was a rock, mentor, banker, coach, protector, mechanic, accountant, attorney, plumber, painter, and anything else needed of him. He expressed love quietly, but there was never a question about how he felt.
Gary would tell you that he had a full life. He said “When I look at the obituaries and I see 80 years old, I don’t even read the rest. You died of old age.” Those of us who loved him disagree; we lost you too soon.
Gary’s memorial service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember Gary fondly for the way he may have touched your life.
