Bill was known to me through-out my apprenticeship with the New Zealand Post office, in particular my time with Cable-jointing in general. He later became a friend when we met up again at the Post Office Training School.

He was a caring sort of person who enjoyed the company of his workmates and took his responsibility of training juniors seriously. Whilst he always enjoyed a good laugh he had a serious pragmatic side too. I benefited from both.

He had time for everybody and often followed up when things got a bit bumpy to check in on how things were going. He was always ready with a cheerful comment laced with some serous advice when ever required.

When I moved to the Post Office Technical Training Centre, Bill was there too, having moved there some time before. He was an energised instructor who would happily spend time with his students when ever they required it. He had a way of dealing with those who thought they already knew everything they needed. He gave them his view of where they were, based on his recent experience of their work and also a personal approach which left them with something to ponder and fix. His success rate reflected his work.

He was a particularly good fellow instructor, always happy to help out where ever he could, yet was able to point the enquirer in the right direction to get the support he/she needed. He was able to confront any issues and avoid the bumps taking us with him on the journey - if we wanted to go.

He was a character who enjoyed spending time with people from all walks of life. He was very much the family man who loved his wife and children. He was particularly proud of his children and their achievements - regularly updating us on their respective progress through the universities and training colleges they attended.

My condolences to his family

So sad to hear of Bill's passing but how appropriate was it that he visited us at Ferrymead less than a month ago.
Bill was a great work mate but also a very good friend. He will be missed. Jim

I have warm and fond memories of many meeting with Bill and various members of the Cambodian community in Christchurch, that he was doing his utmost to help. Bill was a gentle, kind-hearted and selfless soul and I will always remember him with fondness.

To Wilhelmus (Bill) Family, I would like to express my sincere condolences to you all at this very sad time. I had an amazing working relationship with Bill from a youngster right through to my adult life. First as a cable joiner through to working alongside of him as a C&M Instructor. Like many others I held him in high regards and respected him, not only as a colleague but as a life time friend. His friendship, his friendly banter and his smile will be sorely missed. Arohanui to you all. John Bond
