I've just been notified by the NZ Soil Science Society that Dr Trish Fraser died on 24 March, and there will be a memorial gathering of her NZSSS colleagues at Lincoln on 14 May. Distance and family commitments - ongoing six months after my late father's death - will prevent my attendance.
Although I didn't work with Trish, I'm aware of and acknowledge her contributions to soil science education & research at Lincoln and for the wider soil science community throughout New Zealand. She was respected and will be missed.
My condolences to you Trish's husband, daughters and wider family. While you mourn her passing now, may you remember & take pride in her achievement as you carry on through life.
Sincerely,
Dr. Douglas Hicks, FNZSSS,
Auckland

Dear Steve, Alice, Heather, and Katie, I was so deeply saddened to hear of Trish´s passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences for your unimaginable loss. Trish was a remarkable woman and scientist -her keen wit, sparkling humour, and unmistakable Scottish candor brought warmth and light to every room she entered. Taken far too soon, Trish leaves a legacy of strength, kindness, and laughter. My thoughts are with you all during this profoundly difficult time.

The NZSSS Council has learnt with infinite sadness of Trish's passing.
Trish has been a major figure of New Zealand's soil science community for several decades. She was unanimously respected for the quality of her research: a testament to this, she was awarded the Norman Taylor Lecture award in 2009. Trish was also admired for her kindness, her mentorship, and her drive to communicate soil science to many audiences far beyond our traditional ones.
Her service to our Society, in particular, was admirable. She was the first woman to assume presidency of our Society, and until very recently kept engaged with the NZSSS, and managed our social media accounts, which she initiated some years ago now.
She has been incredibly generous to our soil science community with her time and energy. As Louis said, she truly was a soil science hero to many of us.
I will miss Trish dearly, and I know many of us will. While I never worked with her on scientific matters, I deeply enjoyed Trish's enthusiasm for science communication, at a time where scientists were grasping with how to harness social media to carry our voices and passion to the general public.
My deepest sympathies go to Trish's whanau, friends, and colleagues.
Mar sin leibh, dear Trish.

Trish was a soil science hero of mine. Someone I always looked for at conferences and meetings. A truly lovely person. An important role model who gets plenty of mentions in my lectures for her love of soil biology.
